Amapá Explorer Ship Begins Hydrographic Surveys Between Amapá and Amazonas, Strengthening Safe Navigation, Increasing the Draft of the North Bar, and Promoting Logistics and Economic Development in the Region.

Last Tuesday, May 13, Amapá registered a significant milestone for logistics and navigation safety in the region with the christening of the Amapá Hydrographic Ship – a high-tech vessel acquired by the private sector.

The event, which took place at the Port Authority in Santana, was attended by the Governor of Amapá, Clécio Luís, and represented the starting point for a series of strategic actions aimed at improving hydrographic surveys and enhancing the competitiveness of local ports.

The vessel, which already comes with technological innovations, promises to transform research and studies in the area, promoting economic development and expanding the logistical vocation of the state.

Ceremonial Baptism and Launch of a New Era

The baptism of the Amapá Explorer marked the formalization of new equipment in the fleet that conducts important hydrographic analyses in the region. During the ceremony, Governor Clécio Luís emphasized the significance of this investment:

“With this investment from the private sector, we will see ships from all over the world coming through the Mouth of the Amazon River. This will create large-scale business, expand import and export activities, and consolidate our strategic port vocation due to the proximity to the Panama Canal and access to large markets. Piloting delivers to Amapá a significant piece of equipment that will translate into development in our state through safe navigation.”

The vessel, the result of engineering built in Santa Catarina, has a design specially focused on hydrographic surveys, including a stern ramp to move up to 10 tons.

The Amapá Explorer Ship Will Conduct Hydrographic Surveys

The vessel will carry out activities covering extensive stretches of the Amazon Basin.

Its hydrographic surveys will begin in the oceanic part of the mouth of the Amazon River, known as the North Bar, and will extend to the municipality of Itacoatiara, in the state of Amazonas.

During this operation, the vessel will pass through important watercourses, such as the Trombetas, Xingu, Tapajós, and Jarí Rivers, in addition to working in the straits surrounding Marajó Island and in the South Canal.

Modern techniques, such as the deployment and retrieval of buoys equipped with metoceanographic sensors, will be employed to ensure the accuracy of the data collected.

This data collection is essential for conducting studies aimed at improving navigability and ensuring the safety of sea routes.

Thus, the vessel positions itself as an essential tool for making strategic decisions based on robust and current data.

Study on Draft Increase and Its Impact on Competitiveness

In addition to hydrographic surveys, the Amapá Explorer is integrating studies aimed at increasing the draft of the North Bar.

Coordination led by the 4th Naval District aims to enhance the capacity of the Terminals and Ports that transport goods to the Atlantic Ocean, passing through the Port of Santana.

The draft increase will allow larger merchant vessels to enter, boosting import and export flow and reinforcing Amapá’s strategic position in the international port scene.

Ricardo Falcão, vice president of the International Association of Maritime Pilots and director of the National Piloting Council (Conapra), highlighted the importance of this investment, stating:

“This investment has been dreamed of for many years, so we can have more development, more ships, more industries settling in the region, and more commerce happening.”

Strategic Meetings During the Launch of the Amapá Explorer Ship

At the same event, Governor Clécio Luís met with the commander of the 4th Naval District, Vice Admiral Adriano Marcelino Batista, at the Port Authority.

During the meeting, essential topics for improving navigability and safety in maritime traffic were discussed.

The importance of alignment between state authorities and the Navy was also emphasized to optimize the entry of larger merchant ships into the Amazon River and facilitate the exploration of new areas, such as the Maritime Coast and the Oil sector.

The Vice Admiral celebrated the collaboration, stating: “We discussed important topics for better navigability in Amapá. The unity of forces for navigation safety is vital.”

The Minister of Integration and Regional Development, Waldez Góes, also attended the event and took the opportunity to highlight the need for continuous investments in the Amazon.

According to him: “The Amazon needs more and more investments for its development. The contribution of the Navy and Piloting has helped us advance in navigability. The more accurate the information, the better we can make decisions that translate into improving the quality of social life for people.”

Symbol of Hope and Tradition in the Ship’s Baptism

The symbolic aspect of the baptism was highlighted by the presence of the first lady Priscilla Flores, who, as the vessel’s godmother, actively participated in the ceremony by breaking a champagne bottle against the ship’s hull. In emotional statements, she said:

“It is an honor to participate in such a symbolic and hopeful moment for our state. We are launching into the sea not only a vessel but the dreams of an entire people. The Amapá Explorer is a symbol of this new journey; may it sail safely and bring discoveries, may it respect our nature and help build a stronger, more developed, and fairer Amapá for our people.”

The incorporation of cutting-edge technologies into the Amapá Explorer ship represents a crucial advance for monitoring hydrographic parameters and ensuring navigation safety.

Equipped to operate in different environments – from the oceanic part to the interiors of major rivers –, the ship enables the collection of information that will be essential for development policies and the formulation of innovative solutions in the port sector.
