Petrobras and Strohm Conclude Successful Tests of TCP Pipes in the Campos Basin. Technology Promises to Revolutionize the Pre-Salt and Boost Local Production in Brazil.

Last month, Petrobras achieved an unprecedented milestone in offshore exploration by successfully testing thermoplastic composite (TCP) pipes developed by Strohm in the Campos Basin, on the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

The tests demonstrated not only the robustness of the new material but also its easy installation with standard vessels already used by the state company. The initiative marks a new phase in the partnership between Petrobras and the Dutch company, which aims to expand its operations in the Brazilian market.

This was Petrobras’ first open-water test with TCP pipes, a lightweight, flexible, and corrosion-resistant alternative. The objective is to validate the technology for challenging environments, such as the pre-salt, where high levels of CO₂ require innovative and durable solutions.

Strohm and Petrobras Advance in Innovation in the Submarine Sector

The project symbolizes the culmination of months of collaboration between Strohm and Petrobras. According to Renato Bastos, Vice President of Strohm in Brazil, the tests reinforce the transformative potential of the technology in the global deep-water market.

“This successful phase marks the pinnacle of a remarkable collaboration between Petrobras and Strohm over the past few months, and the field test results demonstrate the innovation and quality that TCP brings to the industry,” said Bastos.

Strohm already considers Brazil strategic in its expansion plan, and the success of this technical pilot could accelerate the implementation of a new production unit in the country.

Open-Water Tests Confirm TCP Pipe Performance

During the tests, the composite pipes underwent a series of trials under real conditions, such as crushing, deep immersion (DIP), and underwater vertical connections.

The installation was done in a catenary configuration—a method that simulates the real behavior of the pipe under pressure and depth—remaining submerged for 24 hours.

The advantage of TCP technology lies in its resistance to stress corrosion caused by carbon dioxide, a common challenge in the pre-salt.

This represents a promising solution to increase the durability and efficiency of Petrobras‘ submarine systems.

Pre-Salt on the Radar: Brazil as a Production Hub

The test results paved the way for the qualification of TCP pipes for applications in the Brazilian pre-salt.

According to Strohm, the lessons learned in the Campos Basin will be crucial for improving pipe performance in future projects, especially in post-salt wells and the pre-salt cluster.

According to Gustavo Calazans, General Manager of Submarine Engineering at Petrobras:

“This is an important milestone for our Submarine Industrialization Program, of which Strohm is a key partner. This result strongly contributes to accelerating the installation of a new plant in Brazil, bringing not only technological advances but also competitiveness, increased local content, and cost reduction for Petrobras projects.”

Promising Market for Strohm in Brazil

Petrobras is currently the largest consumer of flexible pipes in the world, with strong demand projections for the coming years.

Strohm’s entry into the Brazilian market comes at a strategic moment, as the country seeks to strengthen its supplier chain and reduce operational costs without compromising innovation.

With TCP technology approved in rigorous tests, Strohm is advancing to establish itself as a key supplier for Petrobras, focusing on sustainable, resilient solutions with high local content.
