Contran Resolution Establishes New Rules for Mirrors Aimed at Increased Safety. Learn the Measures, Deadlines, and Penalties of the New Mirror Law.
A new Contran resolution on mirrors has come into effect. Published in 2022, Resolution No. 960 will effectively start applying at the end of 2024 for passenger cars. The main objective of this new mirror law is to increase road safety. Brazilian standards also align with international standards.
The Contran Resolution No. 960, from 2022, brings important changes. Its rules for passenger cars will become valid in October 2024. The goal is to enhance road safety and standardize Brazil’s regulations with international ones.
New Measures for External Mirrors of Passenger Cars
The new mirror law defines a minimum area for external mirrors. They must have at least 69 cm². If the mirror is square, this corresponds to about 8×8 cm. For round models, the minimum required diameter is 9.4 cm.

Havan will leave the shopping mall in Blumenau to inaugurate something that the chain has never done before: a megastore in half-timbered style in the Historic Center of the city, which is expected to be completed in May and change the landscape of local retail.
A crucial detail: the shape cannot be too rectangular. A circle with a diameter of 7.8 cm must fit inside the mirror. Additionally, a slight curvature on external mirrors is mandatory. This curvature expands the field of vision and helps reduce blind spots.
Who Needs to Worry About the Change?
Most passenger vehicles already come from the factory with adequate mirrors. Generally, original models meet the new standards.
However, motorcycle owners should check their equipment. The same applies to owners of customized cars. Very small sports or decorative mirrors may be non-compliant. The “barend” type, common on sports bikes, is also out of standard.
Specific Rules for Trucks, Buses, and Larger Vehicles
For large vehicles, the requirements of the new mirror law are stricter. Trucks, buses, and motorhomes will need wide-angle mirrors. This item increases the lateral field of vision.
A proximity mirror will also be required. It shows the area near the passenger door. A front mirror, for viewing pedestrians, also becomes mandatory. For these heavy vehicles, the new rules will take effect from October 2025.
Penalties for Non-Compliance with the New Mirror Law
Driving a vehicle with a non-compliant mirror is an infraction. This includes broken, missing, or undersized mirrors. The infraction is classified as serious.
The expected fine is R$ 195.00. The driver also receives five points on their National Driving License (CNH). Additionally, the vehicle may be seized by authorities until it is fully compliant.
Journalist Paula Gama, from UOL Cars, clarified that the new mirror law focuses on external mirrors. Therefore, larger or panoramic internal mirrors that some drivers install remain permitted. These convex internal mirrors can even help eliminate blind spots. The regulation does not restrict the size or type of internal mirror, as long as the vehicle has one.
