Contran Resolution No. 960, of 2022, brings important changes. Its rules for passenger cars became valid in October 2024. The goal is to increase road safety and standardize Brazilian standards with international standards.
New measurements for exterior rear-view mirrors in passenger cars
The new rearview mirror law sets a minimum area for exterior mirrors. They must be at least 69 cm². If the rearview mirror is square, this is equivalent to approximately 8×8 cm. For round models, the minimum diameter required is 9,4 cm.

One crucial detail: the shape cannot be too rectangular. A circle measuring 7,8 cm in diameter must fit inside the mirror. In addition, the exterior mirrors must have a slight curvature. This curvature increases the field of vision and helps reduce blind spots.
Who needs to worry about change?
Most passenger vehicles come with suitable rear-view mirrors from the factory. Original models generally meet the new standards.
However, motorcycle owners should check their equipment. The same goes for owners of custom cars. Sport or decorative mirrors that are too small may be irregular. The “barend” type, common on sport bikes, is also out of standard.
Specific rules for trucks, buses and larger vehicles
For large vehicles, the new law requires more rearview mirrors. Trucks, buses and motorhomes will need a wide-angle mirror. This item increases the field of vision to the side.
A proximity mirror will also be required. It shows the area close to the passenger door. A front mirror, for viewing pedestrians, will also be mandatory. For these heavy vehicles, the new rules will apply from October 2025.
Penalties for non-compliance with the new rear-view mirror law
Driving a vehicle with a rearview mirror that does not meet the established standard is an infraction. This includes a broken, missing or smaller mirror than required. The infraction is classified as serious.
The fine is R$195,00. The driver also receives five points on their National Driver's License (CNH). In addition, the vehicle may be retained by the authorities until it is fully regularized.
Journalist Paula Gama, from UOL Carros, clarified that the new rearview mirror law focuses on the external mirrors. Therefore, larger or panoramic internal rearview mirrors, which some drivers install, are still permitted. These convex internal mirrors can even help eliminate blind spots. The standard does not restrict the size or type of the internal rearview mirror, as long as the vehicle has it.
