Detran Changes the Driver’s License: New Law Took Effect in January 2025. The Driver’s License with New Categories and Validity by Age, and Brazilian Drivers Need to Stay Alert!
Approved by Detran, the new law that changes the National Driver’s License (CNH) brings significant changes for Brazilian drivers, with new requirements that promise to impact daily driving. Effective from January 2025, the reform creates subcategories for automatic vehicles and modifies the validity of the CNH according to the age of the drivers.
End of the Single Driver’s License, Check the New Categories and Deadlines by Age
The new guidelines, introduced by Law 7,746/17, reflect innovations in the automotive sector, establishing the creation of a subcategory for automatic vehicles. The division of category B into two subcategories – B1, for exclusively automatic vehicles, and B2, for automatic and manual vehicles – aims to qualify drivers according to the type of vehicle they have more experience and safety with.
For current holders of category B, the transition will be gradual. These drivers will be able to continue driving vehicles up to 3,500 kg, with up to eight seats, without the need for immediate adaptation. This change aims to improve driver training without imposing abrupt requirements on those who already hold a license.

Requirements for Specialized Courses for Specific Categories
Another point of the new regulation involves specialized courses for drivers who wish to operate vehicles intended for the transport of cargo or passengers. These courses will include practical and theoretical content, focused on safety and advanced driving techniques, requiring more preparation for those looking to drive vehicles of specific categories.
Validity of the Driver’s License by Age Group
The new rules also bring changes to the validity period of the CNH, now defined by age. Drivers under 50 years old will have a validity of 10 years; between 50 and 70 years old, the period is reduced to five years; and above 70, the CNH will have a validity of three years. This measure considers the need for periodic medical exams according to age group.
Mandatory Update Courses Every Five Years
Moreover, the law imposes the obligation of update courses every five years, ensuring that drivers remain aligned with safety practices and updates to traffic rules. This recycling process is especially important for the renewal of specific categories, reinforcing the commitment to safer driving.
Safety and Alignment with Technological Advances
These modifications align with global trends aimed at meeting technological advances and the increasing demand for automatic vehicles. With the creation of an exclusive category for these automobiles, Brazil is preparing for a gradual transition that prioritizes safety and driver preparation.
