The new P-78 platform from Petrobras arrived at its final destination in the Búzios Field this Tuesday (30), located in the Campos Basin, about 180 kilometers from the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The arrival of the vessel represents a strategic milestone for the state-owned company, with the potential to further consolidate the leadership of the field, which is already Brazil’s largest in terms of production volume.
With the integration of the P-78, the expectation is for a significant increase in extraction capacity. The Búzios Field, which according to recent data released by Agência Brasil has already surpassed the mark of 900,000 barrels of oil per day, may see its daily production grow by up to 20%. This advancement reinforces the importance of pre-salt for the energy sovereignty and economy of the country.
Capacity and Technical Details of the New Giant
The P-78 is a Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading unit, known by the acronym FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading). This type of platform ship is designed to operate in ultra-deep waters and has a complex structure capable of performing all stages of the extraction and initial flow of oil and natural gas.

According to the technical specifications released by Petrobras and reported by Agência Brasil, the P-78 platform has the capacity to process 180,000 barrels of oil per day. In addition, the unit can compress up to 7.2 million cubic meters (m³) of natural gas per day, an impressive volume that contributes to the complete utilization of the reservoir’s resources. The construction of the P-78 was a global project, with the hull being manufactured in shipyards in China and South Korea, and the integration of the modules completed in Singapore.
The Operational Impact on the Búzios Field
The arrival of the P-78 platform raises the number of production units operating simultaneously in the Búzios Field to seven. It joins the P-74, P-75, P-76, P-77, Almirante Barroso, and Almirante Tamandaré platforms, which together sustain the high productivity of the area. The new FPSO alone adds a production capacity that could turn Búzios into a field with over 1 million barrels per day.
The Director of Exploration and Production at Petrobras, Sylvia Anjos, highlighted that the field “surpassed daily production of 900,000 barrels of oil,” a number that positions Búzios among the most important assets in the global oil industry. The 20% increase not only boosts the volume but also optimizes the exploration of a reservoir with light, high-quality oil that holds great value in the international market.
Logistical Strategy to Anticipate Production
One of the differentiators of this operation was the logistical strategy adopted by Petrobras to accelerate the start of production. The Brazilian crew that will operate the P-78 platform already traveled onboard since Singapore, where the unit departed on July 13. This decision, which resumes a practice not used by the company since 1999, allowed for essential commissioning procedures and training to be conducted during transport.
With this optimization, the state-owned company estimates to anticipate the start of production by approximately two weeks, a time gain that translates into millions of dollars in revenue. The next steps, according to Agência Brasil, involve the complex mooring services of the platform on the seabed and the interconnection of its production lines to the already drilled oil wells, a process that should take about two months before the first oil is extracted.
Pre-salt as a Pillar of Brazil’s Energy Sovereignty
The expansion of the Búzios Field with the P-78 platform is yet another chapter in the success story of pre-salt. Discovered in 2006, this layer of reservoirs located beneath a thick crust of salt, at depths that can reach 7,000 meters, revolutionized the oil and gas sector in Brazil. Data from the National Agency of Oil, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP) indicate that pre-salt already accounts for about 80% of all national production.
This vast reserve has not only ensured Brazil’s self-sufficiency in oil, eliminating the need for oil imports, but has also positioned the country as one of the largest global producers. The extracted oil, of superior quality (light), has higher added value and lower refining costs, which enhances the competitiveness of Brazilian products in the international market and strengthens the national economy.
