The Latest Version of the Legendary F-15 Fighter Officially Entered Service in the U.S. Air Force (USAF), and the Pentagon Believes It Can Face and Defeat Advanced Russian and Chinese Aircraft Like the Su-57 and the J-20. But Can a Design Based on a 1970s Project Really Compete with the Most Modern Fifth Generation Fighters? The Report from the Operational Test and Evaluation Directorate (DOT&E) Suggests Yes.
The F-15, originally designed in the 1960s, has always been one of the most feared fighters in the world, boasting an unbeaten record of 104 combat victories. But time passes, and new threats emerge. To maintain its relevance, the F-15EX Eagle II has received significant updates, including advanced avionics, increased weapon capacity, and a new electronic warfare system.
Among the main improvements are:
Increased Payload Capacity – The F-15EX can carry more weapons than any other fighter in its class.
-
Historic bankruptcy of Centauro shocks the market, and the century-old company puts more than 500,000 products, machines, and complete infrastructure up for online auction.
-
New shoe factory in Ceará is expected to create 400 jobs and strengthen the local economy.
-
No one imagined it, but a mixture of sawdust with a mineral that fights fires surprises scientists with a result that changes the course of fire-resistant construction.
-
From empty land to a high-end house, wooden construction uses a lightweight system, metal structure for the foundation, ventilated ceramic cladding, and special windows to create an efficient and comfortable living space throughout the year.
Modern Electronic Systems – More advanced sensors enhance its detection and combat capabilities.
Upgrades in Airframe and Engines – Greater durability and lower maintenance costs compared to stealth fighters.
Testing and Evaluation: Is the F-15EX Really Effective?

To verify the effectiveness of the F-15EX, the U.S. Air Force conducted rigorous testing from August 2023 to January 2024. The results were impressive. The fighter was able to detect and track targets at advantageous distances and used onboard and external systems to identify threats and launch munitions accurately.
The Pentagon report states that the F-15EX is “operationally effective in all of its air superiority functions, including defensive and offensive attacks against fifth-generation adversary aircraft.” This performance reinforces the idea that, even without the stealth technology of modern fighters, the F-15EX can be a formidable adversary on the battlefield.
How Does the F-15EX Compare to the Su-57 and the J-20?
The F-15EX faces two direct competitors: the Sukhoi Su-57 from Russia and the Chengdu J-20 from China. Both are fifth-generation stealth fighters, designed for air superiority missions and penetration into protected airspace.
- F-15EX: Superior in payload capacity and advanced sensors, but without stealth technology.
- Su-57: Has limited stealth technology and production issues, but boasts high maneuverability.
- J-20: Is the first Chinese stealth fighter, but its real combat capability remains a mystery.
Despite the lack of stealth, the combination of state-of-the-art sensors, electronic warfare, and large weapon capacity makes the F-15EX a real threat to its competitors.
Electronic Warfare System and Combat Strategies
One of the main innovations of the F-15EX is the EPAWSS (Eagle Passive Active Warning Survivability System), developed by BAE Systems. This system enables the fighter to detect, track, and neutralize electronic threats on the battlefield, increasing its survival chances against stealth fighters and anti-aircraft defense systems.
However, the full capability of the EPAWSS could not be fully tested due to USAF concerns about adversary espionage. Nevertheless, the system has proven to be highly effective in the tests conducted.
