With White Sand Beaches and Sweet, Crystal Clear Waters of the Tapajós River, How the Caribbean of the Amazon Became One of Brazil’s Most Coveted Destinations

A paradise of greenish waters and white sands in the heart of the largest tropical forest in the world. This is Alter do Chão, the district of Santarém, in Pará, which gained worldwide fame as the Caribbean of the Amazon. First of all, it is important to clarify a common confusion: the destination has nothing to do with Ponta do Seixas, which is in Paraíba. This freshwater paradise is a treasure exclusively from Pará.

The fame is no coincidence. Its landscape is dictated by the pulse of the Tapajós River, which creates two destinations in one: a paradise of beaches in the dry season and the magical labyrinth of the flooded forest in the wet season. However, behind this postcard image lies a complex reality of environmental challenges and a future driven by community-based tourism.

The Geography That Explains the Paradise of the Caribbean of the Amazon, the Crystal Clear Waters of the Tapajós River

The nickname Caribbean of the Amazon is justified by a unique feature of the Tapajós River. Unlike the famous Amazon River, which is muddy due to carrying sediments from the Andes Mountains, the Tapajós originates in the Central Plateau and flows over a bed of crystal rocks. This makes its waters remarkably clear, with shades ranging from blue-green to emerald.

The contrast becomes evident at the “Meeting of Waters,” near Santarém, where the blue waters of the Tapajós and the muddy waters of the Amazon run side by side for kilometers without mixing. This phenomenon creates the paradise landscape of Alter do Chão.

Beaches or Forest? The River’s Pulse Dictates Your Journey

Planning a trip to Alter do Chão is, in fact, choosing which version of the destination you want to see. The landscape transforms completely depending on the season.

The “Amazon Summer,” from August to January, is the dry season. The river level drops drastically, revealing hundreds of kilometers of white sand beaches. September and October are the best months, when the beaches reach their maximum extent. It is in September that the Sairé Festival takes place, the most important cultural event of the village, mixing sacred rituals and the folkloric competition of the pink and Tucuxi dolphins.

The Reign of Beaches, What to Do in the Amazon Summer

During the dry season, the beaches are the stars. The main postcard image is the Island of Love, a huge sandbank right in front of the village, accessible by a short canoe crossing. From there, a trail leads to Morro da Piraoca, which offers the most famous view of the region.

For those seeking even more spectacular and deserted beaches, a full-day trip on the Arapiuns River is a must. Its beaches, such as Ponta Grande and Ponta do Toronó, are famous for their vast stretches of sand and even clearer water, with a dark golden hue.

What to Do in the Amazon Winter?

When the “Amazon Winter,” from February to July, arrives, the landscape changes completely. It is the rainy season, and the river rises up to eight meters, completely submerging the beaches. The attraction, therefore, becomes another: navigation through the igapós, the flooded forests.

The most famous tour is that of the “Enchanted Forest”. In it, you can glide in a canoe through the canopies of submerged trees, an immersive and unique experience. This season is also ideal for wildlife observation, as animals concentrate closer to the riverbanks.

The Reality Behind the Paradise, the Drought of 2023, and Community-Based Tourism

The beauty of Alter do Chão coexists with significant challenges. The severe drought of 2023, which reached historical levels, exposed the region’s vulnerability to climate change, isolating more than 9,000 riverbank families. Moreover, the shadow of illegal mining, hundreds of kilometers upstream, threatens the purity of the waters of the Tapajós.

In response to these pressures, a strong movement of community-based tourism has been growing in the region. Led by the indigenous Borari people, the original inhabitants of the village, this model offers more authentic and sustainable experiences, such as overnight stays in the forest, rituals, and lunches in river communities. Choosing these tours is the best way to ensure that the true Caribbean of the Amazon remains a treasure for the world and, above all, for its people.

E muito esgoto a céu aberto, além de fezes dos paraense sem tratamento correm direto para as águas do tapajos. Uma realidade triste que o MP Pará é os cidadãos de Santarém e alter do chão fecharam os olhos.
