While smartphones have become more powerful, larger, and heavier, a contrary trend has emerged among some Chinese brands: the race to create the thinnest phone in the world. And the new champion has already appeared — with less than 6 mm in thickness, a 50 megapixel camera, and a design as elegant as it is futuristic. But there’s a catch: most people will never be able to fit it in their pockets. The model in question is part of a new wave of ultra-thin phones, which revive the obsession with slim design from the 2000s, but without sacrificing power and high-end cameras. Manufactured in China, it pushes the limits of engineering by offering a body thinner than a pen, an advanced camera module, and a thickness less than that of many credit cards.
Thickness of Less Than 6 mm: The New Industry Record
For years, the title of the world’s thinnest smartphone has been contested by brands like Vivo, Oppo, Huawei, and more recently, Honor. In 2023, the Honor Magic V2 stood out by achieving only 4.7 mm in thickness when opened, becoming the thinnest foldable on the market.
Now, new Chinese manufacturers are launching regular smartphones (without a foldable screen) measuring below 6 mm — something that requires creative solutions in battery, cooling, and internal component distribution.

Why Is This So Hard to Do?
Creating such a thin phone is not just a matter of design. The extreme reduction in thickness poses technical challenges that affect every aspect of the device:
- The battery needs to be thinner while still providing reasonable autonomy
- The heat dissipation system needs to be efficient even with less space
- The cameras must maintain quality and large sensors, even with more compact modules
- The physical structure needs to be sturdy enough to avoid twisting or breakage
That’s why, even with all current technology, most major brands do not bet on such thin models for the global market. The risk of compromising usability and durability continues to be a real concern.
And the 50 MP Camera?
Despite its extreme thickness, the Chinese phone broke another taboo: it features a 50 MP rear camera, with advanced post-processing algorithms, ultra-fast autofocus, and electronic stabilization. The lens is discreetly integrated into the rear module, without causing the “bump” so common in thicker phones.
The photo quality is particularly impressive in well-lit settings, with sharp captures and true-to-life colors. In nighttime environments, performance is satisfactory thanks to AI computational features — even with a sensor smaller than that of high-end Samsung or Apple phones.
Not Everyone Can Buy
The biggest obstacle? Limited availability. These ultra-thin phones are often released exclusively in the Chinese market, targeting consumers who value design above all else. Many models do not even support the 4G and 5G internet bands used in Brazil and Europe, making importation and usage outside of Asia difficult.
Moreover, large-scale production is more costly, and there are not enough commercial incentives for these brands to launch global versions. Western consumers still prefer phones with large batteries and more robust construction — something that goes against the ultra-thin proposal.
In other words: you can admire this phone in pictures and videos, but you probably will never see one in a local store.
Is It Worth Having an Ultra-Thin Phone?
It depends on what you value. If you are the type who prioritizes:
- Minimalist and elegant design
- Light and discreet devices
- A differentiated experience in daily use
… then an ultra-thin phone with 6 mm or less may seem like the ideal dream.
But if you prefer:
- Long-lasting battery
- Cameras with optical zoom and larger sensors
- High performance for gaming or heavy multitasking
… a more robust and complete smartphone will still be the best choice.
The Future of Ultra-Thin Design
Although not a dominant trend, increasingly thinner phones show that there is still space for innovation beyond the norm. In an era of increasingly larger and more similar phones, models like this stand out for their boldness and commitment to a nearly artisanal design.
The industry is still trying to find the ideal balance between thickness, performance, battery life, and comfort in use. But one thing is certain: the thinnest phone in the world has become a symbol of elegance and cutting-edge technology, even if it is inaccessible to most.
