Robert And Tiffany Williams Received By Mistake The Equivalent Of R$ 654 Thousand And Used The Amount To Buy Cars, A Trailer, And Travel. Now, They Face Charges Of Theft.

An incorrect deposit changed the life and destiny of a couple from Pennsylvania, United States. In May 2019, Robert And Tiffany Williams discovered that US$ 120 thousand (about R$ 654 thousand) had been credited to their bank account. The money, accidentally transferred by a BB&T bank employee, was quickly spent on cars, trips, and luxury purchases. What seemed like a stroke of luck ended with criminal charges of theft and misappropriation.

According to broadcaster WNEP-TV, the bank attempted several times to contact the couple to request the return of the funds. Without a response, the institution took legal action, initiating a case that gained national attention and became an example of the limits of the law in cases of financial error.

The Mistake That Became A Police Case

The episode began when a BB&T employee in Georgia entered the wrong account number while making a business transfer.

The amount landed in the personal account of the Williams, residents of Montoursville, a small town in rural Pennsylvania.
Instead of notifying the bank or returning the amount, the couple withdrew and spent the money within a few days.

According to the investigation, purchases included a sports car, an SUV, a trailer, and even a race car.

Part of the money was also spent on travel and personal debts. When the error was identified and the bank requested the return, the balance was already nearly zero.

Defense, Trial, And Possible Sentence

When summoned, Robert and Tiffany claimed that they “followed bad legal advice” and did not understand the seriousness of the situation.

Still, the Public Prosecutor formally charged them with theft, misappropriation, and receiving stolen property.

According to the case, each one faces four criminal charges and could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.

The case is still ongoing, and both remain free while awaiting trial.

What The Law Says About Erroneous Deposits

In the United States, just like in Brazil, money received by mistake does not belong to the beneficiary, even if the deposit occurred without direct fault.

The misappropriation of undue amounts is interpreted as unjust enrichment and, depending on the context, can constitute the crime of theft or robbery.

Experts emphasize that the duty of return is immediate, and the good faith of the receiver is a determining factor to avoid harsher penalties.

Ignoring the error or spending the received amount is considered bad faith and can lead to imprisonment and the obligation of full restitution.

A Reminder About Ethics And Financial Responsibility

Cases like that of the Williams illustrate how a simple erroneous deposit can turn into a legal and financial disaster.

The temptation to spend the money “that fell from the sky” can cost freedom, reputation, and years of legal battles.

The lesson is clear: even when the error is not yours, the money is not yours either.

Transparency with the bank and immediate restitution are the only ways to avoid serious consequences.
