Federal University of Viçosa Will Be Responsible for Conducting Studies Authorized by the Federal Government in the Sertão of Piauí
Last Tuesday (21), the Federal Government authorized the start of a study conducted by the Federal University of Viçosa to seek solutions for the water shortage in the Northeast. The proposal for the study is to integrate the São Francisco River basin with the basins of the Piauí and Canindé Rivers in the Sertão of Piauí. If everything goes well, in a few years the study will manage to solve the situation of water scarcity for approximately 1 million people in the region.
This authorization was granted by the signing of a Decentralized Execution Term (TED), which permits the start of the Technical, Economic, and Environmental Feasibility Study to construct the Canal that will integrate the basins. Present at the meeting were the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, accompanied by the Minister of Regional Development and the National Secretary of Water Security. Understand how this study will be conducted in today’s article.

Investment in the Study Will Be R$4.7 Million and Will Promote Development in the Northeast Region of Brazil
The total investment, made by the university and funding agencies, is estimated at R$4.7 million, and if the studies yield positive results, the Piauí region will see an expansion in regional development. The federal government’s authorization will enable the connection between the largest rivers in the state of Piauí, the Piauí and Canindé tributaries with the Sobradinho Reservoir in Bahia.

The rivers in the state of Piauí form the largest hydrographic basin in the state and encompass an area of 89 cities in the semi-arid zones that make up the sertão. The population in these regions lives in a precarious socioeconomic situation due to frequent water shortages. Thus, the project can contribute to attracting more interest from companies in the region and stimulate the generation of new jobs.
Project Will Be in Partnership with the Federal Government and Will Adopt the supply driven Modality That Stimulates Economic Development from Water for the Sertão of Piauí
The work will be in partnership with the Ministry of Regional Development (MDR) of the Federal Government and the National Water Agency (ANA) and will be developed in the supply driven model. In other words, the study will reuse the water from the São Francisco River to address water scarcity and also promote regional economic development.
President Jair Bolsonaro celebrated the beginning of this new phase.
“This is a great step that represents progress, peace, and tranquility for the population of the interior of Piauí”
Jair Bolsonaro, President of the Republic of Brazil during an event in 2022.
Concerning this, the Minister of Regional Development, Daniel Ferreira, highlighted the importance of this initiative in meeting the needs of low-income individuals.
“The transposition of the São Francisco River allows us to take the waters further away. We have plans to bring the waters to Alagoas, Sergipe, Ceará, and now also to Piauí, benefiting a hydrographic basin that has 40% of the population without income and 45% earning only a minimum wage”
Daniel Ferreira, Minister of Regional Development of the Federal Government, during an event in 2022.
And closing the statements, Sérgio Costa, National Secretary of Water Security of the ministry, emphasized the positive aspects of this new work for the Northeast.
“The semi-arid region of Piauí is a dry land, but fertile. In terms of regional development, we can see great advances. It rains more in this region than in California, USA, for example, which is still the fifth largest GDP — Gross Domestic Product — in the world. Therefore, this work will bring development to the state of Piauí”
Sérgio Costa, National Secretary of Water Security of the Ministry of Regional Development of the Federal Government, during an event in 2022.
What we have for today is to hope! Hope that these studies will be promising and solve the water shortage in one of the largest states in the Northeast.
