Even with a 2012 design, the 1.4 TSI engine with 150 hp stands out for its reliability and performance, becoming the strong point of the new Volkswagen T-Cross SUV against the problems of Compass and the pace of Corolla Cross.
The Volkswagen T-Cross arrives for the 2025 lineup with a renewed look and the mission to maintain its status as the best-selling SUV in Brazil. In a competitive market, the bet of the top-of-the-line Highline version remains the same: its renowned mechanical set. But in a scenario with more modern rivals, is the 1.4 TSI engine still a competitive differentiator? The answer is yes, and it has become the main weapon of the new Volkswagen SUV.
While direct competitors such as the Jeep Compass suffer from reports of chronic problems and the Toyota Corolla Cross offers a more restrained performance, the T-Cross bets on what consumers value most after the purchase: peace of mind. Its engine may not be the newest, but it is the most reliable, and that has become its greatest advantage.
The History Of The 1.4 TSI Engine With 150 Hp
The engine that powers the T-Cross Highline is the 1.4 TSI from the EA211 family, a well-known figure in Brazil. Launched globally in 2012, it became famous for equipping prestigious cars such as the Golf and the Jetta, building a solid reputation for robustness and performance, very different from its problematic predecessor (the EA111).

With 150 hp of power and 25.5 kgf.m of torque, the secret to its agility lies in its power delivery. All the torque is available from a very low 1,400 rpm, ensuring quick responses in traffic and secure overtaking on the road. This performance translates into an acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.6 seconds.
The Reliability Of The T-Cross Against The Problems Of Competitors

The age of the 1.4 TSI project has become its greatest asset. While the T-Cross offers a track record of reliability, its rivals face a different scenario. The Jeep Compass, although appearing more powerful on paper with its 185 hp, suffers from the bad reputation of its T270 engine. The most notorious problem is excessive oil consumption, which has generated numerous complaints from owners and service actions.
On the other hand, the Toyota Corolla Cross relies on the brand’s reputation for durability. However, its 2.0 naturally aspirated engine, with 175 hp, delivers a considerably inferior performance and a less exciting driving experience than that of Volkswagen’s rival, representing a more rational than passionate choice.
What Has Changed In The T-Cross 2025, The New Volkswagen SUV?
For the 2025 lineup, the new Volkswagen SUV received a facelift that aimed to address some of its criticisms. The design has been updated with 100% LED headlights and taillights, and the interior has gained soft-touch materials on the dashboard, improving the perception of quality.
However, the cabin remains a controversial point. The excessive use of hard plastic in areas such as the central console and rear doors is still a target of criticism for a car that costs nearly R$ 180,000. Additionally, its trunk, with a capacity between 373 and 420 liters, is versatile but smaller than that of some direct competitors.
How Much Does It Cost To Maintain The Sales Leader In 2025?

The Volkswagen T-Cross Highline 2025 has a suggested retail price of R$ 179,990. A major attraction in ownership cost is the “Standard Maintenance” program, which offers the first three services (up to 30,000 km) for free.
This makes the initial cost of owning the T-Cross very competitive. Starting from the fourth service, the costs align with those in the category, but the initial savings and the reputation for reliability of the mechanical set, which tends to require fewer unexpected repairs, are important factors in the purchase decision.
Is The T-Cross Engine Still The Best Choice?
The choice among Brazil’s best-selling SUVs comes down to a decision of priorities. The T-Cross does not have the most luxurious finish nor the most powerful engine on paper, but it offers the best balance for those who value the driving experience.
The new Volkswagen SUV is the ideal choice for the driver who seeks agile performance and, above all, peace of mind from a tested and approved mechanical set over a decade. It positions itself intelligently, offering a more exciting driving experience than the Corolla Cross and much greater reliability than the Jeep Compass, proving that in the Brazilian market, a good “old” engine can be the best novelty.
