With the Mission to Replace the Most Beloved Car in Brazil, the Polo Track Bets on Robustness, Safety, and a Reliable Engine to Dominate Fleet Sales, but Its Proposal for the Common Consumer Has Nuances.

When Volkswagen decided to retire the Gol after 42 years of leadership, the question was: who would take its place? The answer came with a smart strategy. Instead of creating a car from scratch, the brand adapted its portfolio and launched the Polo Track, a robust and simplified entry version, to be the new “workhorse” of Brazil.

Focused entirely on sales to companies and rental agencies, the Polo Track quickly became a success, helping the Polo line become the best-selling in the country. However, for the common consumer, the choice requires analysis: it offers a superior platform and engine, but sacrifices some simplicity in equipment.

The Mission to Replace an Icon: Why Was the Polo Track Born?

The end of the Gol marked the close of an era, but also of a dated project. To modernize its entry-level offering, Volkswagen used the Polo’s platform to create a more affordable and functional version. The Polo Track maintained the look of the previous generation of the Polo, while the rest of the line was restyled, creating a clear division between the “work car” and the “passenger car.”

This strategy was a success. The main focus of the Polo Track is direct sales, which accounted for 64% of all Polo line registrations in the first quarter of 2024. It was designed to be durable, economical, and reliable, exactly what fleet operators and rental agencies are looking for.

The Reliable 1.0 MPI Engine with 84 hp

The engine of the Polo Track is an old acquaintance and one of its biggest assets: the 1.0 MPI from the modern EA211 family. This three-cylinder engine, with an aluminum block and 12 valves, is recognized in the market for its reliability and efficiency.

It delivers 84 hp of power and 10.3 kgf.m of torque with ethanol. Its main quality is agility in the city. The maximum torque arrives at just 3,000 RPM, ensuring brisk starts and pickups, giving the impression of being stronger than the numbers suggest. In terms of consumption, it also stands out, reaching up to 16 km/l on the highway with gasoline, according to media tests.

The Advantage of the MQB Platform: What Does the Polo Track Have That Rivals Don’t?

The biggest technical differentiator of the Polo Track is its construction on the modern MQB platform, the same one used for more expensive Volkswagen cars. This translates into two main benefits that its direct rivals, such as the Fiat Mobi and Renault Kwid, do not offer at the same level.

The first is safety. Thanks to the platform, it comes standard with four airbags (two front and two side) and, most importantly, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a crucial item for preventing loss of control of the car. The second is interior space. With a wheelbase of 2.56 meters and a trunk space of 300 liters, it is considerably more spacious and comfortable for passengers than subcompacts.

The Reality of the “Workhorse”: What’s Missing in the Cheapest Volkswagen Car?

The philosophy of the Polo Track is that of “calculated essentialism.” The list of standard equipment is lean: air conditioning, electric power steering, and front power windows. The most noticeable and criticized absence is a <strong(factory sound system. Radio or multimedia center are sold only as accessories at the dealership.

The interior finish is also simple, with heavy use of hard plastic, prioritizing durability over luxury. This puts it in a delicate position when compared to rivals like the Chevrolet Onix and Hyundai HB20, which, in the same price range, tend to come much better equipped.

Why Could the Polo Track Be More Expensive for the Owner?

Despite being an entry-level car, the total cost of owning a Polo Track can be a surprise for the private buyer. The reason is the high depreciation, a side effect of its own success.

Since the car is sold in huge volumes to rental agencies and fleets, the used car market becomes flooded with basic models. This large supply ends up pushing down the prices of used cars. According to a study by Quatro Rodas magazine, this more pronounced depreciation could make the monthly cost of owning a Polo Track ultimately higher than that of a Fiat Mobi, which is cheaper.
