Harvey Gulf, The American Maritime Transportation Company, Selected A Wärtsilä Solution For The First Hybrid Retrofit Of Supply Vessels In The Americas.
A hybrid retrofit installation, featuring an energy storage solution from the Wärtsilä technology group, will enhance the efficiency and environmental performance of the Harvey Energy vessel, owned by Harvey Gulf, the company said on Tuesday. The ship is the first LNG-powered and will be the first hybrid adapted for PSV in the Americas. The order with Wärtsilä was placed in April 2019.
“The company also ordered a battery system from GE for the Harvey Supporter,” commented Harvey Gulf CEO Shane Guidry.

“We are pleased to work with Wärtsilä and GE to deliver the first two battery systems in America for oil and gas service vessels,” he added.
According to Harvey Gulf, the installation of a 1450 kW hybrid battery solution from Wärtsilä will reduce the vessel’s emissions, fuel consumption, and noise levels. Andtotal fuel cost savings are expected to be in the range of 10 to 20%. The battery capacity will be sufficient to navigate in and out of port on electric power while providing electrical power for hotel use when docked, which will reduce noise and pollution levels in the port area.
Furthermore, the ability to operate on battery power will assist with maneuverability during critical dynamic positioning (DP) operations on the offshore platform.
The solution includes the Energy Storage System, the Energy Management System, the transformer, and the drive, all housed within a single container. The project will also include integration with existing Wärtsilä power distribution, energy management, and integrated automation systems. The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for delivery in December 2019.
“We partnered with Wärtsilä several years ago due to their significant expertise in LNG engine technology and dual-fuel engines, which align very well with Harvey Gulf’s mission to have the most fuel-efficient fleet of supply vessels in the Americas. When we decided to enhance these characteristics by installing hybrid technology, Wärtsilä was the natural choice,” said Shane Guidry.
“Additionally, Wärtsilä’s excellent understanding of our company and our business has resulted in very strong service support after vessel delivery. This support has resulted in zero unplanned downtime for the five LNG-powered PSVs in the Harvey Gulf fleet. We believe our mutual project will have a significant impact on the market and drive environmental momentum towards sustainable solutions in the offshore market.”
Wärtsilä’s hybrid solutions are based on a fully integrated hybrid power module. This combines engines, an energy storage system using batteries, and optimized power electronic components to work together through an energy management system developed by Wärtsilä. While the Harvey Energy will be the first PSV in the Americas to have a hybrid retrofit, Wärtsilä has already completed a series of hybrid retrofits for PSVs in Europe.
