Aura Sul Wind, The First Offshore Wind Power Project in Brazil, Will Be Installed in Rio Grande do Sul with Operations Set to Begin in 2030. Understand the Impact.

With an estimated investment of US$ 100 million, Brazil is preparing for a new era in clean energy generation with the launch of the country’s first floating offshore wind power project. Aura Sul Wind, officially presented in Porto Alegre, promises to place Rio Grande do Sul at the center of discussions on energy innovation and sustainability.

The project was formally launched on Friday (13), with the signing of the letter of intent by the responsible international consortium, led by the Japanese JB Energy. The project uses advanced technology to operate in deep waters, with significant gains in efficiency, cost reduction, and low carbon emissions.

Aura Sul Wind

Aura Sul Wind represents a strategic turning point in Brazil’s energy transition.

It is the country’s first floating offshore wind power park, which instead of anchoring turbines to the seabed, bets on floating platforms with Raijin FOWT® technology, developed to operate at sea, where winds are stronger and more consistent.

The structure will be built of reinforced concrete with a modular model, ensuring greater efficiency both in assembly and installation.

In addition, the project was designed to boost the local production chain and strengthen the state’s position in the national energy matrix.

Strategic Participation of Institutions and Partnerships

In addition to JB Energy, the project has the support of important institutions such as UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul) and ABEEólica (Brazilian Wind Energy Association).

Together, these entities collaborate to validate the technology in Brazilian territory, develop skilled labor, and integrate the academic sector with energy innovation.

The project is also part of the Green Ports Program, which aims to transform the Port of Rio Grande into a low-carbon logistics hub, aligned with global goals for sustainability and transportation decarbonization.

What is Offshore Wind Energy?

Offshore wind energy is one of the world’s most promising renewable sources.

It harnesses the power of winds at sea — more intense and consistent than on land — to drive giant turbines mounted on fixed or floating platforms.

The movement of the blades activates generators that convert kinetic energy into electricity.

These systems, composed of turbines that exceed 100 meters in height, operate with winds of up to 11 km/h and work at very high efficiency.

The energy generated is transported by submarine cables to the shore, where it is integrated into the national electrical system.

This technology not only offers high generation potential but is also essential in the fight against climate change, as it significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Offshore Wind Energy in Brazil is Potential to Be Explored

Despite its vast coastline and favorable conditions, Brazil is still taking its first steps in exploring offshore wind energy.

Aura Sul Wind emerges as a pilot project to stimulate the development of new ventures in the sector and prepare the country to compete globally in this segment.

With the growing demand for renewable sources and the urgent need to decarbonize the energy matrix, projects like this are seen as key to ensuring energy security, environmental sustainability, and creating skilled jobs.

The advancement of Aura Sul Wind positions Brazil as one of the pioneers in adopting floating solutions for generating clean energy in the southern hemisphere.

By combining technological innovation, sustainability, and strategic partnerships, the country demonstrates it has the potential to be a leader in the global energy transition — and that the sea can literally be a source of a greener future.
