Electric Toyota Land Cruiser Drives 7 Km Underwater, Reaches 30 Meters Depth and Sets World Record for Submerged Crossing.

A 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser Series 40, converted to electric propulsion, completed one of the most impressive crossings in automotive history: 7 km submerged in Darwin Harbour, Australia. In some sections, the vehicle reached 30 meters depth, something almost unimaginable for any SUV. The feat lasted 12 hours, with an average speed between 1 and 3 km/h, and established a world record for submerged crossing. This achievement transformed the model into a symbol of resilience, re-establishing the Land Cruiser as a benchmark in robustness and innovation.

Electric Motor as the Secret to Victory

The conversion to electric motor was crucial to achieve the record. Unlike combustion engines, which need air to function and end up stalling in flooded environments, the electric motor does not depend on oxygen, allowing for the crossing even in deep waters.

In a previous attempt, still with a combustion engine and snorkel, the same Land Cruiser managed only about 3 km submerged before failing. The electric adaptation was the key turning point to push past the limits.

From Classic to “Mud Crab”: The Reinvention of an Icon

The vehicle used was a Land Cruiser Series 40, a classic model from the 70s, famous in Brazil for the “Bandeirante” version. Simple in its design, it was the ideal choice to withstand the necessary adaptations for extreme crossing.

Nicked named “Mud Crab”, the jeep became a legend by combining tradition and innovation: a durable classic, updated with electric propulsion to face an impossible challenge.

The Challenges of the Submerged Crossing

The electric Land Cruiser had to overcome obstacles that go beyond mechanics:

  • Water Pressure at 30 meters depth.
  • Corrosion Risk from contact with saltwater.
  • Lack of Visibility and need for special navigation.
  • Energy Management to ensure the batteries lasted 12 hours submerged.

Even in the face of these extreme conditions, the jeep completed the journey, establishing a new benchmark for endurance testing.

Comparisons with Rivals and Previous Attempts

Rival SUVs, such as the Land Rover Defender, Nissan Patrol, and Mitsubishi Pajero, have been tested in extreme off-road conditions, but none have accomplished anything similar in a fully submerged environment.

The record achieved by the Land Cruiser reinforces Toyota’s reputation for creating vehicles capable of going beyond the conventional—especially when combined with the innovation of electrification.

The Impact of the Record on the Future of SUVs

The achievement shows how electrification can bring unexpected advantages in extreme scenarios. Electric vehicles, if well-protected against infiltrations, can surpass limits that would be fatal for combustion engines.

This type of test is not just a spectacle: it can serve as a basis for innovations in rescue vehicles, underwater exploration, or military, where crossing flooded terrains can be a matter of survival.

A Milestone in Automotive History

More than just driving 7 km underwater, the Land Cruiser Mud Crab demonstrated that the future of SUVs can go beyond the road and dry land. It broke paradigms, set a world record, and proved that even a model from 1978 can reinvent itself with modern technology.

From classic vehicle to submerged legend, the Land Cruiser reinforced its title as the toughest SUV in the world.
