The Expansion of the Abreu e Lima Refinery, Located in the Suape Industrial Complex, Enters a New Phase with the Resumption of the Works on Train 2. The Project, Coordinated by Petrobras, Promises to Significantly Increase the Refining Capacity in Brazil
Governor Raquel Lyra visited the plant on Thursday (12), accompanied by Lieutenant Governor Priscila Krause, at the Abreu e Lima Refinery, in the Suape Industrial Complex.
The state-owned company estimates a billion-dollar investment, the amount of which will be officially announced soon. The work on Train 2 represents the main expansion front of the complex.
The processing capacity will increase from the current 130 thousand barrels per day to 260 thousand barrels by 2029.

Direct and Indirect Jobs Until 2029
According to Raquel Lyra, the expectation is that the construction of the new unit will generate 10 thousand direct jobs and up to 30 thousand indirect jobs over the next few years.
“The estimate is that approximately 10 thousand direct jobs and up to 30 thousand indirect jobs will be generated. This is an example of sustainable growth in Pernambuco together with the federal government, in partnership with Petrobras, which is making a billion-dollar investment to drive the development of our State“, declared Raquel Lyra.
Construction Starts in the Coming Months
The general manager of the Abreu e Lima Refinery, Márcio Maia, informed that the construction of Train 2 has already had its bids launched and is in the phase of closing and evaluating proposals. In total, seven bids were published in November 2024.
The execution of the work will be done in stages. Part of the production is expected to start operations as early as 2026.
The forecast is for the unit to reach 180 thousand barrels per day at this stage. The total capacity of 260 thousand barrels will be achieved after the complete conclusion of the work, expected for the first half of 2029.
National Technology and Innovation
During the visit, the president director of the Suape Port Industrial Complex, Armando Monteiro Bisneto, highlighted the modernization of the refinery’s industrial park.
“Today the refinery processes about 130 thousand barrels, by the end of next year it should reach 180 thousand barrels and by 2029 reach its predicted maximum capacity of 260 thousand barrels per day. A modern and innovative refinery, one of the most modern in Brazil,” he said.
He also mentioned that the pace of the works is a result of the technical engagement of the professionals involved, reinforcing the strategic nature of the project.
Staggered Production Until 2029
Production will be released in stages, as each part of the work is completed.
The Petrobras plans to deliver and put into operation some units by December 2026, accelerating the generation of value from the project.
This staggered delivery model was adopted to ensure quicker economic gains, without relying on the total completion of the work. The strategy aims to meet the demand for fuels and strengthen Brazil’s position in oil refining.
