With The Progress Of The Railway To The Port Of Pecém, Representatives Of Pernambuco Are Deeply Disturbed By The Decision Of The Ministry Of Infrastructure
The political and economic forces of Pernambuco are deeply disturbed by the decision of the Ministry of Infrastructure because the works of the Transnordestina Railway will only advance the branch that reaches the Port of Pecém, leaving the branch to the Port of Suape in the background. Since the decision was announced by Minister Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas on July 21, the political and business elites of Pernambuco have started to clash and exchange accusations. The Section Will Be Delivered Only To The Port Of Pecém, In The State Of Ceará
Although there has not yet been an official statement from the federal government regarding the construction of the Transnordestina railway, Minister of Infrastructure Tarcísio de Freitas stated in a recent interview with Valor Econômico that the route will be delivered only to the Port of Pecém, in Ceará. According to Freitas, there would be no viability for the construction of both sections, and therefore, only one should be built.
The minister’s statement has heated debates and raised questions about the motivations for choosing the Ceará section. Politicians and public agents have been striving to attract public attention to the imbroglio surrounding the controversial railway.

The Transnordestina Railway Project
The Transnordestina railway is not a project for a railway to Suape or Pecém. The concession was made almost 26 years ago and we still do not have a built work. In its conception, Transnordestina is a project of regional integration. Therefore, it is not a work of Ceará or Pernambuco.
It is a work that integrates various production and logistics chains, consequently. The railway was not designed to solve the economic issue of Suape or the economic issue of Pecém, but rather to integrate the Northeast and, from there, integrate the region with other productive chains.

The state government of Mato Grosso announced a public calling for the construction of a state railway to connect the capital Cuiabá to the municipalities of Rondonópolis, Nova Mutum, and Lucas do Rio Verde, cities in the interior of the state. The project’s route has 730 km, an estimated investment of R$ 12 billion with 45 years of operation, and could generate about 235 thousand new jobs in the state.
The new railway that will connect Cuiabá to Rondonópolis, as well as Rondonópolis to Nova Mutum and Lucas do Rio Verde, in addition to connecting with the national railway network, will have an investment of R$ 12 billion. According to the state of Mato Grosso, the investment will generate over 235 thousand jobs, as well as enhance the economy. The start of construction will be 6 months after the submission of the environmental licensing, which will be partially the responsibility of the state government of Mato Grosso and the other part by the company that wins the public call for the railway. The works are expected to begin by the end of 2022.
According to the governor, the railway is important for the export of grains and for connecting the industry and commerce of Mato Grosso with the national market. Governor Mauro Mendes says that “the food and ethanol industry will flow through this railway. And there is all the legal security to do it, and in a few years they will hear the train whistle from here in Cuiabá to the mid-north.”
