The Joint Venture Altera&Ocyan That Provided Services to Petrobras in Baúna Now Has Karoon as a New Client in the Asset
Rio de Janeiro, November 9, 2020 – The joint venture Altera&Ocyan expanded its client portfolio last Friday (11/06) with the signing of a chartering and operation contract for the FPSO Cidade de Itajaí (CDI) with Karoon Energy Ltda (a company listed on the Australian stock exchange), which is the new holder of the concession for Block BM-S-40, where the Baúna field is located, in the southeastern Santos Basin. The JV has been operating the CDI in the Baúna field since 2013 for Petrobras.
The client change is due to Karoon’s acquisition of the block, which also expanded the contract with Altera&Ocyan for another four years, ensuring the CDI’s operation in Baúna until February 2026, with the additional option to renew for up to two more years, that is, until 2028.
“We are excited to have Karoon as a new client and for the contract expansion, which would expire in February 2022, with Petrobras. The renewal reaffirms that Altera&Ocyan has been delivering high operational and safety performance, which adds significant market value for both our JV and the new operator of the field,” celebrates Jorge Mitidieri, Vice President of Integrated Services at Ocyan.

Alert in the fuel market: Analysts and a former director of ANP warn that oil prices may worsen in the coming months due to global instability.
The FPSO Cidade de Itajaí has reached over 109 million barrels of oil produced with an average operational uptime of 99.7% since operations began in 2013 to date. Operated by the joint venture Altera&Ocyan (a 50/50 partnership between Ocyan and Altera Infrastructure), the FPSO has safety and performance metrics that reinforce the success of the operation.
During the pandemic, the FPSO reported no cases of COVID-19 on board, a result of a rigorous prevention process and health protocols, which ensured full activity during the past months. Additionally, we recorded more than 930 days without accidents involving absence.
“We are pleased to announce this important contract for many years with Karoon and we are committed to working together to maximize production in the future in the Baúna field with the CDI,” commented Chris Brett, President of Altera Production.
“Karoon is very happy to be joining Altera&Ocyan in Baúna. The company’s operational metrics and safety record on the asset have been excellent, and Karoon looks forward to building a constructive relationship moving forward,” stated Robert Hosking, Executive Director of Karoon.
Altera&Ocyan has two assets, besides FPSO Cidade de Itajaí (CDI), the Pioneiro de Libra (PDL), both with stable long-term and consolidated contracts.
The Cidade de Itajaí
The Cidade de Itajaí is the first production unit operated by the joint venture Altera&Ocyan. Built at the Sembmarine shipyard in Singapore, the FPSO arrived in Brazil on December 29, 2012, starting operations on February 16, 2013.
The asset can operate in water depths of up to 1,000 meters, with a capacity to produce 80,000 barrels of oil daily and compressing and injecting two million cubic meters of gas per day.
CDI also has female leadership. Mechanical engineer Nathalia Souza Teixeira, 31, has been managing the vessel’s activities since November 2018. The team consists of about 60 members on board and 25 onshore, in addition to the shared team between the two Units operated by the JV (the other unit being FPSO Pioneiro de Libra). Nathalia graduated from the Federal University of Minas Gerais and started her career at Ocyan in 2014.
