After some time, Ocyan announced the return to the submarine area of operation through an action planned together with the offshore construction vessel from Solstad. The action will take place in Brazil, specifically in Rio de Janeiro, and was contracted by Petrobras.

Known as Normand Cutter, the offshore construction vessel from Solstad is already in Brazil to begin the action led by Ocyan’s team. The submarine strategy was developed to enable Petrobras’s operations and marks Ocyan’s return to underwater construction, an area with which the team already has experience, despite the years of disengagement. For a large corporation like Petrobras, having a specialized team is the way to ensure quality and safety.

This is the First Decommissioning Contract for Offshore Production Fields in Brazil and Marks Tests at Petrobras

The executive manager of submarine construction at Ocyan, André Luiz Magalhães, spoke a little about the activity being developed and the objective behind it.

According to his statements, the Normand Cutter, offshore construction vessel from Solstad, will work on the decommissioning of underwater structures. The demand came from Petrobras, as previously mentioned, and was requested to be implemented in two offshore basins.

No further details were given about which basins were specifically covered, but the general location is Rio de Janeiro.

According to Magalhães, it is also important to mention that this is the first decommissioning contract for offshore production fields in Brazil, which represents an investment by Petrobras in innovation and improvement in workflow.

Additionally, the contract with Petrobras was also an opportunity for Ocyan to return to working with submarine construction services after a period away from the field.

Offshore Services Are Expected to Last Around 18 Months, According to Ocyan’s Preliminary Planning

When discussing each stage of the planning for this Petrobras action, Rafael Guigon, director of submarine construction contracts at Ocyan, highlights the offshore construction vessel from Solstad as one of the key components to achieving the stipulated objectives: “For Ocyan, the presence of the Normand Cutter in its fleet is a strategic point and will be a window of opportunity for new contracts in submarine construction,” he said.

And Guigon’s plan is to continue the partnership for a longer period, as he continued in his statements: “From now on, we can look for other projects that require this type of asset as a working tool for the activities developed in this area. This vessel will allow the execution of simultaneous projects.”

Regarding the technical information of the Normand Cutter, it is worth noting that the vessel has a crane lifting capacity of 300 t, in addition to being equipped with a flex-lay system of up to 100 t. For the action led by Ocyan for Petrobras, the idea is to assemble a team of 23 specialists to make up the entire vessel.

According to the plan made, including the routes drawn around Brazil, it is expected that the offshore services will last, on average, 18 months.

Ocyan’s return to the field of submarine services is a significant gain as it enhances actions around the world, especially when executed in partnership with Solstad, such as the Normand Cutter vessel. Petrobras made a good decision by closing the contract for Brazil, and tangible results are expected throughout 2024, according to the established schedule.
