Açu Port Receives Mega Investment from Norwegian Company for Development of a Green Hydrogen Production Hub.

Norway is about to make a significant leap in the renewable energy sector, focusing on an ambitious green hydrogen project in Brazil. The Norwegian company Fuella, with the support of Allianz Capital Partners, secured a strategic area within Açu Port, in the northern part of the state of Rio de Janeiro, to develop a green hydrogen production hub.

This mega investment comes at a crucial moment, shortly after Brazil approved a legal framework aimed at attracting investments in low-carbon hydrogen production, establishing itself as one of the leading nations in the global energy transition.

Norwegian Mega Investment in Brazil Promises Many Jobs

The interest of Norway in Açu Port is not a coincidence. The Scandinavian country, known for its leadership in renewable energies, is eyeing the opportunities that Brazil offers, especially after the creation of a regulatory framework that facilitates and encourages the development of green hydrogen projects.

Fuella, which has the support of Allianz Capital Partners – one of the largest global insurers – sees Brazil as fertile ground to expand its operations and lead the green hydrogen revolution in Latin America.

Mauro Andrade, the executive director of business development at Prumo Logística SA, the company operating Açu Port, highlighted the importance of the abundant renewable energy in Brazil as a key factor for the economic viability of the project.

“You have cheap and abundant renewable energy,” Andrade stated, pointing to the great potential for green hydrogen production in the country.

Norwegian Fuella Plant at Açu Port Will Have a Capacity of 520 MW

Green hydrogen, produced from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, without greenhouse gas emissions, is seen as the fuel of the future. Its demand is expected to grow exponentially as the world moves towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy matrix.

Norway is positioned to become a leader in this market, using Brazil as a strategic base for large-scale production of this fuel.

The CEO of Prumo Logística, Rogério Zampronha, revealed that the company plans to build a green ammonia plant at Açu Port, with a capacity of 520 MW, using the electrolysis process. This unit will have the potential to produce 400,000 tons of green ammonia per year, which will be stored and shipped through the Açu Liquid Terminal (TLA), focusing on export.

Green ammonia, derived from green hydrogen, is one of the most promising products for export due to its applicability in various industries, including fertilizers and sustainable fuels.

Açu Port, located in Rio de Janeiro, is establishing itself as one of the world’s leading green hydrogen hubs. The area designated for the development of green hydrogen projects, covering 1 million square meters, is already in the process of being fully reserved, with Prumo Logística negotiating with other interested developers.

The choice of Açu Port is not only strategic due to its privileged geographical location but also because of its robust infrastructure and established transportation routes. Fuella and its partners are committed to leveraging these advantages to create an efficient and sustainable supply chain that will serve both the domestic market and the export market.

Impact of the Project on Industrial Sectors

The mega investment from Norway in green hydrogen in Brazil has the potential to transform industrial sectors facing significant challenges in reducing their carbon emissions, known as “hard-to-abate.” Among the sectors that will benefit most are the steel industry, the fertilizer chain, and the production of clean fuels such as methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

These segments, which are responsible for a significant share of global carbon emissions, find in green hydrogen a viable solution to reduce their environmental impact. Rogério Zampronha, CEO of Prumo Logística, emphasized that “these hard-to-abate segments will inevitably need specific solutions like the use of low-carbon hydrogen.” With the development of the project at Açu Port, Brazil could position itself as a leading supplier of sustainable solutions for these critical sectors.

Norway Invests Heavily in Clean and Sustainable Technologies

Norway has stood out as a country committed to the energy transition, investing heavily in clean and sustainable technologies. The green hydrogen project at Açu Port is further proof of this commitment, demonstrating Fuella and its partners’ long-term vision to create a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

By investing in Brazil, Norway not only strengthens its position in the global renewable energy market but also contributes to the development of a green infrastructure in Brazil that could be replicated in other countries. The cooperation between Norway and Brazil on this project exemplifies how international collaboration can accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy, benefiting the environment and future generations.

The mega investment from Norway in green hydrogen at Açu Port marks a new chapter in the construction industry and in renewable energies in Brazil. With the support of giants like Allianz Capital Partners, Fuella is positioned to lead green hydrogen production in Latin America, pushing Brazil to the forefront of the global energy transition.
