The 1.6 THP (Turbo High Pressure) engine is a name that evokes mixed feelings in Brazil. The result of a partnership between the PSA Group (Peugeot/Citroën) and BMW, it promised to revolutionize the market with high performance and efficiency. However, its trajectory was marked by a reputation for requiring extra maintenance.

Launched in Europe in 2007, the THP engine (also known as Prince) arrived in Brazil around 2010. With advanced technologies such as turbocharging and direct fuel injection, it delivered power and torque of larger engines but with lower consumption.

Performance was its main attraction, equipping everything from sporty compacts to SUVs. However, this sophistication came with challenges. The “high sensitivity to Brazilian gasoline,” with its ethanol content, and other factors led to a series of chronic problems that undermined the confidence of many consumers.

The Chronic Problems of the THP Engine, What You Need to Know

Despite good performance, the THP became known for some recurring failures, especially in its early gasoline versions.

Carbon Build-Up on Intake Valves: As a direct injection engine, the fuel does not “wash” the intake valves. Over time, oil vapors from the crankcase can settle and form a carbon crust, causing loss of power, erratic idling, and increased consumption. The most effective solution is mechanical cleaning, such as “walnut blasting”.

The Famous Timing Chain: The most feared problem is the premature wear of the timing chain kit. The classic symptom is a metallic noise, like a “clattering”, that appears when starting cold and tends to disappear when the engine is hot. Ignoring this signal is risky, as breaking the chain can lead to catastrophic engine damage from piston and valve collisions.

High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP): Responsible for delivering fuel under high pressure to the injectors, the high-pressure pump, especially in early non-flex models, proved sensitive to Brazilian gasoline. Its main failure symptoms are difficulty starting, loss of power, and the engine anomaly light illuminated on the dashboard.

The THP engine powered a wide range of vehicles in the Brazilian market. Extra care in maintenance applies to all, but especially to early gasoline generations.

Peugeot: 208 GT, 308, 408, 508, 2008, 3008, and RCZ.

Citroën: C4 Lounge, C4 Picasso/Grand C4 Picasso, DS3, DS4, DS5, and C4 Cactus THP.

BMW/Mini (Prince engine): The base architecture of the THP was also used in models like the BMW Series 1 (116i/118i) and the Mini Cooper S and Countryman from previous generations.

How to Care for Your Car with THP Engine

Strict preventive maintenance is the best way to ensure the longevity and proper functioning of the THP engine.

Oil and Fuel: The golden rule is to use exclusively 100% synthetic 0W30 oil that meets PSA’s specific standards (e.g., PSA B71 2312). Oil changes should be done every 10,000 km or 1 year, or sooner in severe use. Always refuel with high-quality fuel, preferably additive or premium gasoline.

The Evolution to THP Flex: Around 2015, PSA launched flex versions of the THP engine. These versions received important updates that corrected many chronic problems, such as a more robust high-pressure pump and an upgraded timing chain kit. Therefore, THP Flex models are considered a safer bet in the used car market.

Specialized Labor: For diagnostics and repairs, always seek a mechanic or workshop with proven experience in THP engines. Specific technical knowledge is crucial to avoid mistakes and unnecessary expenses.

Is It Worth Buying One of the Cars That Used the THP Engine?

The decision to buy one of the cars that used the THP engine requires careful analysis. The pros are excellent performance and an attractive price in the used market. The cons are the history of problems and potentially high maintenance costs.

Who is it worth it for? For the informed buyer, who will conduct a thorough pre-purchase inspection and is committed to strict preventive maintenance. Prefer models manufactured from 2016 onward, already with the THP Flex engine, which are more reliable. With the right care, it is indeed possible to enjoy all the performance and driving pleasure that this European engine can offer.

Tenho um C4 lounge Tendance 2015 Flex e não tenho do que reclamar. Estou com ele há 10 anos! Todos os problemas citados já foram resolvidos.

Ganhou quanto da GM para escrever um artigo raso e sem embasamento técnico. Dizer que o THP é problemático beira o absurdo. Realmente a bomba de alta das versões gasolina, não suportam a NOSSA gasolina, o problema não é o motor e sim o nosso combustível.
Dos motores turbo, THP está entre os mais confiáveis e se há quebras, são em periferia. Ninguém abre a boca para falar das bombas problemáticas que são os TSi 2.0 ou os GM 1.0 ou 1.2.
Fez um desserviço escrevendo algo que já é amplamente difundido na internet, de maneira **** e rasa.
