Introduced in Brazil as a cutting-edge technology, Ford’s Powershift transmission quickly became one of the biggest headaches in the national automotive industry. The automated dual-clutch transmission, which promised agility and efficiency, in practice generated a series of chronic failures, resulting in financial losses and much frustration for thousands of owners.

What Is the Powershift Transmission and Why Did It Become a Nightmare?

The Powershift DPS6 is a six-speed automated transmission with a dry dual-clutch system.

The technology is ingenious: while one clutch manages the odd gears, the other already has the even gear engaged, allowing for almost instantaneous shifts. The promise was for a sportier and more efficient performance.

New Fiesta Hatch 1.6: Produced from 2013 to 2019, it was one of the first to receive the transmission in the SE, SEL, and Titanium versions.

New Fiesta Sedan 1.6: Like the hatch, the sedan was also equipped with the Powershift in various versions between 2013 and 2019.

New Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost: The SEL and Titanium versions with the imported turbo engine, sold from 2016 to 2019, also used the transmission.

Focus Hatch 1.6: The third generation of the Focus (2014-2019) had the Powershift as the main automatic option for the 1.6 engine.

Focus Sedan 1.6: The same applies to the sedan body with the 1.6 engine, which also suffers from the same chronic problems.

Focus Hatch 2.0: The versions with the powerful 2.0 Duratec Direct Flex engine (2014-2019) were also mostly sold with the Powershift.

Focus Sedan 2.0: The sedan with a 2.0 engine rounds out the Focus lineup among the cars equipped with the controversial Powershift transmission.

EcoSport 1.6 and 2.0: The second generation of the SUV (2013-2017), before the facelift, offered the Powershift in the 1.6 Sigma and 2.0 Duratec engines.

Just the new clutch kit costs between R$ 3,300 and R$ 7,000, while a new TCM module ranges from R$ 3,700 to over R$ 5,500, not including specialized labor. This hefty cost has led many owners to take legal action against Ford.

This reality has directly impacted the used market. Cars equipped with the controversial Powershift transmission suffer a much sharper depreciation than their competitors. Dealerships often refuse these models in trades or offer values well below the market price, fearing the assumption of the problem.

An Essential Guide on What to Check Before Buying a Used Car With Powershift

If even with all the warnings you still consider the purchase, extreme caution is necessary.

Request the Maintenance History: Check if the car has undergone clutch or TCM module replacements. The lack of a clear history is a terrible sign.

Check the Recalls: Ensure that the vehicle has undergone all software updates and service programs offered by Ford for the transmission.

Take a Complete Test Drive: Drive in heavy traffic, accelerate vigorously, and test the car on inclines. Be attentive to any signs of shaking, noise, or shifting failures.

Take It to a Specialized Mechanic (Mandatory Step): The most important step. Only a professional with proven experience in Powershift can make an accurate diagnosis, using a scanner to read the fault codes from the TCM and evaluate the real condition of the transmission.

If any of these points show problems, give up the purchase. The risk of significant financial loss and much headache is simply too high.
