Logcomex Registers Nearly US$ 4 Billion in International Trade with the Brother Country

To reach European markets, Brazilian goods have heavily relied on Portugal. Exports of crude oil, soybeans, corn, aviation kerosene, flat-rolled iron or steel, wood, and resins accounted for the majority of Brazil’s exports to its brother country at a total of US$ 3,887,590,598 in FOB value from January to October 2022, according to data from Logcomex.

The CEO of Logcomex, Helmuth Hofstatter, argues that the proximity of Portugal to large trading partners such as Spain, France, and the United Kingdom gives Brazil a competitive advantage as a gateway. Over US$ 7 billion in annual trade occurs between Brazil and these three countries.

Helmuth also points out that Portugal benefits from its location next to the Atlantic Ocean, which allows access to shipping routes.

Assistance from the Brazilian Government

The ApexBrasil, the Brazilian Agency for the Promotion of Exports and Investments, Sebrae, the Brazilian Support Service for Micro and Small Enterprises, and Banco do Brasil are just a few of the Brazilian government entities that offer export promotion programs for Brazilian companies.

Logcomex data shows that maritime transport of goods from Brazil to Portugal is extremely common.

Itágua, Campos de Goytacazes, and Santos, all in the state of Rio de Janeiro, were the main exporters of Brazil’s goods to Portugal.

Here Are Five Tried-and-True Methods for Selling Goods in Portugal.

The head of Logcomex lists five bold strategies that would ensure profitable export of Brazilian products to the Portuguese market.

  • 1) Regularly Research New Potential Markets in Portugal.

“There will always be an opportunity to export your product,” says Helmuth, whether due to a lack of domestic supply in the destination country or the sale of inferior products or services in the same market from other nations.

Therefore, he emphasizes the importance of constantly researching the market and new prospects to know how to recognize them, especially if the goal is to sell items from Brazil to Portugal.

He suggests that Brazilian entrepreneurs learn to present their products in a way that adds value and meets the demands of the target market. Understanding broader macroeconomic conditions is also crucial. This includes things like the relative cost of labor, currency value, and the cost of key inputs.

Helmuth explains that researching exporters and importers is simplified with the use of Logcomex’s export platform. Understanding the company’s market share is only half the battle; you also need to be able to identify unexplored markets.

  • 2) Consider Cultural Variations

When attempting to sell products in Portugal, cultural differences between Brazil and Portugal can be an obstacle. This is where many exporters stumble, as they do not think enough about the cultural factors that can make a difference.

The CEO of Logcomex believes that a lack of cultural familiarity should not be seen as a barrier to successful negotiation. Everything can be resolved with careful preparation, he thinks, after becoming familiar with the local market and culture.

On the other hand, Helmuth emphasizes the importance of thoroughly investigating cultural norms, modes of communication, and values to ensure that they do not constitute an insurmountable barrier to economic agreements between countries. If you want to make proactive plans, he says, you should also learn about their seasonality.

  • 3) Choose Reliable Suppliers

Working with reliable partners is crucial in exporting goods from Brazil to another country, just as in any business venture. It meets all regulations, standards, and requirements imposed by international trade and provides high-quality items at competitive prices in the market. Most importantly, they must be ethical to ensure compliance, which is a priority when dealing with European nations in negotiations.

Attending trade shows, as recommended by Helmuth, is a great way to find high-quality new suppliers. References from other Portuguese companies that export to Brazil are another good starting point, he says.

If you are looking for a place to get answers, the Luso-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce and Industry offers a unique service to help you find the best possible suppliers for your international trade.

  • 4) Submit All Necessary Paperwork

Bureaucratic requirements for shipping goods from Brazil to Portugal must be fulfilled before beginning the international transaction. Both the exporter and importer must have the appropriate documentation to complete this transaction.

When importing products from Brazil to Portugal, the most common documents are:

  • Certificate of Origin for Commercial Invoices
  • Sanitation Certificate/Phytosanitary Documentation
  • Delivery Order/Bill of Lading (for maritime transport).

5 Take Advantage of Modern Technological Methods

When it comes to exporting and importing, technology is a powerful ally for the entrepreneur. There are several fields of research that benefit from the use of the Logcomex platform.

  • Average Values for Exporting Goods
  • Expanding Export Opportunities
  • Exporting Cycles and Product Patterns
  • Cost Reduction for Exports
  • Division of Export Volume by State
  • The primary customs clearance units for the product, quantity of export in weight, total FOB value, and mode of export are all graphically displayed.
