“Father of Pix” Carlos Brandt Leaves the Central Bank After 23 Years and Takes Office at the IMF. Pix Creator Will Bring Brazilian Experience to Transform Payments Worldwide.

After more than two decades dedicated to the Central Bank of Brazil, economist Carlos Eduardo Brandt, known as the “Father of Pix”, announced his departure in 2025 to take a position at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This change represents not only the end of a 23-year cycle in Brasília but also the international recognition of a Brazilian model that has become a worldwide reference in financial innovation.

The Main Character’s Speech — What Brandt Said Upon Announcing the Change

Honored to join the International Monetary Fund, on the Payments and Financial Market Infrastructures team. Very excited to broaden my knowledge and support the strengthening of payment systems globally!

With this statement published on his official LinkedIn profile, Brandt made it clear that his next challenge will be to contribute to the modernization of financial infrastructures on a global scale, bringing the successful experience of Pix to other countries.

From the Central Bank to Multilateralism

At the Central Bank, Brandt led the Pix Management and Operations Department and the Relationship Management and Supervision of Payment Institutions, roles that placed him at the center of the country’s largest financial inclusion project.

At the IMF, he will work in a multilateral environment, collaborating with governments and central banks in the implementation of instant payment systems, seeking greater operational efficiency and strengthening inclusion.

Pix: The Revolution That Changed Brazil

Launched in November 2020, Pix quickly established itself as Brazil’s primary payment method. Today, there are over 159 million individual users, 15 million businesses, and 858 million active keys.

Only in June 2025, the system moved R$ 2.8 trillion; in the total for the first half, the volume had already reached nearly R$ 16 trillion. These numbers demonstrate the strength of a tool that combined practicality, speed, and low cost, becoming one of the world’s largest cases of financial innovation.

The Legacy of Brandt at the Central Bank

Carlos Brandt’s career at the Central Bank began in 2002 and was marked by his involvement in structuring projects, such as the reform of the Brazilian Payment System (SPB) and the implementation of the Reserve Transfer System (STR). But it was with Pix that he left his definitive mark.

Under his leadership, the Central Bank designed a unique architecture: real-time settlement, zero cost for individuals, availability 24/7, and governance that integrated banks, fintechs, and payment institutions into a single network.

The success of Pix has not gone unnoticed outside of Brazil. The Brazilian model has started to be studied in multilateral organizations and by central banks of different countries, being cited as an example of innovative public policy with a high social impact.

Brandt’s move to the IMF represents the culmination of this recognition: one of the key figures behind the system will now work to support countries in developing their own digital payment solutions, leveraging the lessons learned in Brazil.

The Global Challenge: Interoperability and Inclusion

At the IMF, Brandt’s mission will be to support projects aimed at:

  • Implementation of instant payment systems;
  • Studies on interoperability between different national platforms;
  • Promotion of financial inclusion in emerging countries;
  • Integration of new technologies, such as central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).

This agenda is directly connected to the global movement of financial digitization and the search for cheaper, more efficient, and secure systems.

Carlos Brandt’s departure from the Central Bank and his arrival at the IMF symbolize a historic milestone for the Brazilian and global financial system. He leaves behind the legacy of a project that transformed the way the country pays, transfers, and relates to money, and now takes on the responsibility of sharing this experience on an international scale.

More than the “Father of Pix,” Brandt becomes the ambassador of a Brazilian financial revolution, taking proof to the world that innovation, efficiency, and inclusion can go hand in hand.
