Russia Air Defense Updates Its Pantsir-S1 System. Russia’s Pantsir-S1 Is a Highly Coveted and Highly Technological Air Defense System.

The air defense system manufacturer High Precision Systems has completed the delivery of an undisclosed number of mobile Pantsir-S1 air defense platforms to Russia’s air defense forces. The company has been working to increase supplies and provide troops with the necessary tools for aerial cover against Ukrainian drone attacks and ballistic and cruise missiles.

Rostec, the parent company of High Precision Systems, stated in a press release on Tuesday (5) that the updated version of the Pantsir-S1, from Russia’s air defense, is different from the basic model, with modifications based on the experience gained by air defense troops operating in the special military operation in Ukraine.

According to the company, improvements have been introduced to the air defense system to increase the efficiency of its work against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), complex projectiles, and long-range missiles. The results of the system in combat demonstrated the correction of previously made design accuracies.

The company did not disclose information about the improvements made to the Pantsir-S1. However, based on previous experiences and reports, some ideas about the updates to Russia’s Pantsir-S1 can be gleaned.

The Pantsir is a unique air defense system capable of firing medium-range anti-missile projectiles with dual 30 mm anti-aircraft guns. The former can reach enemy missiles between 1.2 km and 20 km away, while the latter has a maximum firing range of up to 4 km.

Other Variants of the Pantsir-S1 From Russia

The 12 solid-fuel two-stage missiles on board propel up to 1,300 meters per second to reach targets flying up to 1,000 m/s, and feature a 20 kg warhead designed to explode large enemy projectiles, such as fixed-wing aircraft, missiles, and large drones.

The 30 mm guns are modernized remote 2A38M automatic cannons, a tested and proven short-range weapon that is also installed on the self-propelled anti-aircraft missile and gun system 2K22 Tunguska, which emerged in the early 1980s.

It is important to note that, in addition to the Pantsir-S1 from Russia’s air defense, there are many other variants, including Pantsir-SA, unveiled in 2020 and developed to operate in Arctic conditions, and the Pantsir-SM, which features an enhanced radar station, expanding the system’s targeting range to 40 km and its detection range to up to 75 km.

The Pantsir is in service with the Russian Aerospace Forces, the Navy, and Russia’s air and missile defense system. It has also been extensively exported to countries such as Algeria, Iran, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Serbia, Oman, Syria, and Ethiopia.

Modifications Already Made to the Pantsir

The use of Pantsir in Ukraine offers important clues about the types of updates that can be expected in the recently constructed systems being implemented by High Precision Systems. According to Brian Berletic, a former U.S. Marine and geopolitical writer, the Pantsir-S1 missile air defense system is a mobile platform that provides point air defense.

Throughout recent conflicts, it has been possible to intercept a range of munitions, from drones and cruise missiles to ballistic missiles and even guided Himars rockets.

With the Pantsir successfully adopted to virtually destroy any aerial threats that Ukraine and its NATO sponsors may launch, the primary goal of Russian arms manufacturers will now be to develop a sufficient number of them to establish an impenetrable air defense system.
