The Wind Farm Was Built by EDF Renewables in Campo Formoso, Bahia. The Complex Will Supply Demand for the Petrochemical Braskem
EDF Renewables has begun operations at a wind farm located in Campo Formoso, in the state of Bahia. The venture, which will meet the demands of the petrochemical Braskem in the state, received investments of R$ 1.5 billion and will feature 82 wind turbines and 344 MW of installed capacity (equivalent to the consumption of 850,000 Brazilian households). In the agreement made, Braskem committed to purchasing energy from EDF Renewables’ project for 20 years in a renewable energy purchase agreement.

The Wind Farm of EDF Renewables in the State of Bahia
The construction of this wind farm in the state of Bahia is the third project by EDF Renewables to begin operations in Brazil, involving the implementation of a hiring and training plan for local labor so that residents in the areas near the venture can take advantage of these opportunities. The peak of service contracts by EDF Renewables reached over 800 people, of which 67% were local labor.
Throughout the construction project of the wind farm, several socio-environmental actions were also carried out, such as the production of nurseries, the planting of over 15,000 seedlings, and the planting of 20 typical species of the caatinga, such as Licurizeiro, Umbuzeiro, Braúna, Angico, and Aroeira, which are native to the caatinga vegetation, representing 100% of the Brazilian biome.

Including this wind farm, named Folha Larga Norte, EDF Renewables has a total capacity of 527 MW in Brazil. In the Northeast region, the company also expanded the Ventos da Bahia wind farm (182 MW) more than 300 kilometers from the capital of Bahia, the Serra do Seridó wind farm (242 MW) in Junco do Seridó, and both are under construction in the state of Pará.
The Contract Between Braskem and the Wind Complex in Bahia
The Folha Larga Norte wind farm enabled the sale of energy, having been made feasible in the government auctions ACR A-4/2018 and ACR A-6/2018, in the free market through the establishment of a commitment with the petrochemical Braskem as an anchor consumer, in addition to other agents. Under the agreement, the company committed to purchasing energy from the EDF Renewables wind farm in Bahia for 20 years in a renewable energy purchase contract.
Paulo Abranches, the CEO of EDF Renewables in Brazil, states that the hiring of renewable energy in the free market allows companies to contribute decisively to the energy transition, as well as to promote significant impacts for businesses and social improvements in the surrounding projects. The energy purchase and sale contract for energy produced at the wind farm in Bahia, with the petrochemical Braskem, demonstrates the competitiveness of EDF Renewables and positions them as an important player in renewable energy in Brazil, concludes Abranches.
Gustavo Checcucci, Director of Energy at Braskem, stated that such a partnership with EDF Renewables meets important premises of the company’s sustainable operation, as well as contributing more effectively to the feasibility of new sources of renewable energy in the country’s energy matrix and at Braskem, helping to reduce carbon emissions and strengthening the socioeconomic development of the interior of Bahia, prompted by the construction of the wind farm.
The Director of Energy at Braskem also emphasizes that the company aims to be among the best chemical industries in the world in terms of intensity and energy consumption, strengthening them as a significant user of energy from renewable sources. A commitment has recently been made to become carbon neutral by 2050, and the use of renewable energy matrices in their operations is an essential part of this process.
