UFMS Offers Free Italian Course for the First Time to the Community; Enrollment Open Until September 14.

The UFMS offers free Italian courses for students, staff, and also for the external community, in an unprecedented initiative aimed at internationalization. According to UFMS, this action is a result of the Project Transnational Italian in Higher Education, in partnership with the Università degli Studi di Cagliari, in Italy, and aims to bring Mato Grosso do Sul closer to global teaching and research networks.

Enrollment is open until September 14, 2025, with preliminary results on September 16, final results on the 18th, and classes scheduled to start on September 22. This is the first time that UFMS offers free integrated Italian courses and conversation clubs, expanding access to linguistic and cultural education.

Who Can Participate in the Courses

The UFMS offers free Italian courses to different audiences, with specific selection criteria.

For undergraduate students, selection will be based on General Average of Achievement. Postgraduate students will compete based on the number of courses completed with grades A and B. For staff, the criterion will be the duration of service at the institution.

For the external community, slots will be available after prioritizing the university community.

According to UFMS, this opening represents an important advance in democratizing access to language education, offering opportunities both for those who are already part of the university and for society in general.

How Long and How the Courses Will Be

The UFMS offers free Italian courses in two formats: in-person and online. In the in-person model, classes will occur on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 PM to 7 PM.

In the virtual format, classes will have meetings on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the same time.

In addition to regular classes, UFMS also provides conversation clubs: online on Tuesdays and in-person on Wednesdays, always from 7:30 PM to 9 PM.

These practice spaces increase the chances of real contact with the language, making the learning experience more dynamic and inclusive.

What Is the Impact of This Initiative

By announcing that UFMS offers free Italian courses, the university reinforces its internationalization process as outlined in the Institutional Development Plan 2025–2030. According to Gustavo Cancio, director of the Internationalization Agency (Aginter), the measure aims to align the institution’s Language Policy with global academic partnerships.

The impact goes beyond language teaching: it involves international mobility of students and staff, joint projects with foreign universities, and greater visibility for UFMS in international rankings.

In practice, the initiative brings Mato Grosso do Sul closer to European academic networks and strengthens cultural exchange.

Why UFMS Invests in Italian

The decision that UFMS offers free Italian courses is not only academic but also strategic.

The language is linked to areas such as arts, history, literature, gastronomy, and science, as well as expanding research and cooperation possibilities.

For Cancio, the free courses combined with conversation clubs prepare both the internal and external community for the challenges of international cooperation.

According to UFMS, the partnership with the Università degli Studi di Cagliari strengthens historical and cultural ties between Brazil and Italy and creates new pathways for bilingual education.

This is an unprecedented opening that could transform the linguistic and educational landscape of the region.

The decision that UFMS offers free Italian courses marks a watershed for the institution and for the Mato Grosso do Sul community.

More than language classes, the project is a movement for inclusion, internationalization, and cultural rapprochement.

And you, do you believe that UFMS is opening a unique opportunity for those who wish to learn Italian and participate in international programs?

Should this free model expand to other languages?
