Brazil Is About to Take a Huge Step Toward Sustainability With the Construction of the First Green Methanol Plant in the Country. The Project, Which Will Move a Billion-Dollar Investment and Generate Thousands of Jobs, Promises to Revolutionize the Energy Sector and Position Pernambuco as a National Leader in Clean Fuels!
With the official signing between the Pernambuco government and the Danish company European Energy, the plant will be built at the Port of Suape, reinforcing the state’s strategic position in the global energy transition, according to the site diariodepernambuco.
R$ 2 Billion for the First Green Methanol Plant in Brazil
On Monday (23), Pernambuco consolidated its leadership in sustainability by receiving a investment of R$ 2 billion for the construction of Brazil’s first green methanol industry. Governor Raquel Lyra, along with the CEO of European Energy, Jens-Peter Zink, signed the contract marking the arrival of this historic venture. Covering an area of 10 hectares at the Suape Industrial Port Complex, the plant will produce 100,000 tons of e-methanol per year, fueling ships with clean and renewable fuel.
This move is seen as a landmark not only for the state but for the entire country, which is now positioning itself as a pioneer in the green hydrogen chain. According to Raquel Lyra, “the investment attracts other businesses and places Pernambuco on the map of the economy of the future.” With construction expected to start in October 2025, operations are set to begin in July 2028, generating 250 direct jobs and around 15,000 indirect jobs.

The Importance of Suape in the Energy Revolution
The Port of Suape played a vital role in choosing Pernambuco to host this venture. The arrival of the new container terminal from the giant Maersk was decisive in attracting European Energy. The location stands out for its strategic geographical position and robust infrastructure, which is becoming a reference in innovation and energy transition.
Raquel Lyra highlighted the state’s role in implementing sustainable projects: “We are heavily investing in biogas and now in e-methanol production, proving that Pernambuco is aligned with the economy of the future.” In addition to being a clean fuel, green methanol is produced from renewable sources, reinforcing the state’s commitment to sustainability and reducing polluting emissions.
Green Methanol: The Fuel That Will Change Everything
e-methanol, also called green methanol, is a renewable fuel produced from green hydrogen and other clean sources, without generating polluting emissions. In addition to being a viable solution for maritime transport, it integrates perfectly into the production chain of various industries seeking to reduce their carbon footprint. For Jens-Peter Zink, CEO of European Energy, “Brazil has everything to establish itself as a protagonist in the global energy transition, and this new plant is just the beginning.”

Green methanol emerges as a promising alternative amid the growing global demand for sustainable energy solutions. With Brazil fully entering this market, the country strengthens its position in the race for a cleaner economy, while opening doors for new investments and technologies.
Growth Opportunities and New Investments
In addition to boosting the local economy, the new green methanol plant in Suape will attract a series of other investments for the state. The economic development secretary, Guilherme Cavalcanti, emphasized the impact of this venture: “The integration between e-methanol and the current matrix of renewable energy in the state will create a favorable environment for the arrival of new businesses.”
The partnership with Maersk, which is constructing Latin America’s first 100% electrified container terminal in Suape, reinforces Pernambuco’s potential as a logistical and industrial hub. The new terminal, with an investment of R$ 1.6 billion, will begin operations in 2026 and will be one of the main distribution channels for the green methanol produced at the plant.
With this strategic move, Pernambuco not only attracts new projects but also solidifies its position as a leader in the clean energy sector, paving the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future.
