In September, the company achieved a historical milestone in its refinery park, registering the highest monthly performance of its entire trajectory.
The refineries of Petrobras achieved a historic result in September regarding energy efficiency, reaching a level of 101 points on the index that measures specific energy consumption. For the year-to-date, this index reached 103.8 points, demonstrating a significant advance in this aspect.
This optimization of energy intensity in the refinery park resulted in a 25.4% reduction in natural gas consumption compared to the year 2020, prior to the implementation of the RefTOP program. This program aims to boost operational performance, ensuring greater efficiency and sustainability.
This reduction in natural gas consumption also reflects a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. It is estimated that this reduction is equivalent to the emissions of more than 75,000 urban buses operating five days a week.

Additionally, in September, the refineries recorded an excellent result regarding greenhouse gas emission intensity in the refining process, reaching a mark of 36.2 kgCO2eq/CWT, repeating the level achieved in August. These impressive results are the result of the integrated work of the teams from the Operation, Optimization, Maintenance, and Engineering areas of the refineries, which utilize robust technological solutions.
These results reflect Petrobras’ ongoing commitment to energy efficiency and the sustainability of its operations. The RefTOP program, launched in 2021, aims to enhance energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase operational availability, and expand the oil processing capacity of the pre-salt layer.
Petrobras recognizes the importance of aligning its operations with the values of safety, environment, and health, constantly seeking to improve its processes and ensure the sustainability of its activities.
These results achieved by Petrobras’ refineries demonstrate the company’s commitment to adopting more efficient and sustainable practices, contributing to the preservation of the environment and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The pursuit of greater energy efficiency is crucial for ensuring the company’s competitiveness and promoting the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy matrix.
