Through the Petrobras Socio-Environmental Program, the state-owned company supports eight new projects aimed at the conservation and restoration of forests
Petrobras has begun this year to support eight new projects aimed at the conservation and restoration of forests and natural areas in various biomes across the country, through the Petrobras Socio-Environmental Program. The initiatives will receive a total of around R$ 27 million by 2023, which are part of the “Climate” action line, involving care for forests and also encompassing three other projects already supported by Brazil’s largest oil company. Petrobras Initiative in the Conservation and Restoration of Forests
The new projects that will receive investments from Petrobras are being developed in states across the Northeast, North, and Southeast regions of the country. These projects also relate to the global goal declared by the United Nations General Assembly of the “Decade of Ecosystem Restoration,” aimed at increasing efforts to restore degraded ecosystems, creating effective measures to combat the climate, food, water crises, and negative impacts on biodiversity.
Through carbon capture carried out by trees, the initiatives will help prevent greenhouse gas emissions over their operational time. Additionally, Petrobras’ contributions aim to promote various social and environmental benefits, such as the conservation of biodiversity, the empowerment of communities, and income generation through support for local production chains, food security, the development of forest inventories, and the establishment of databases.

Projects Aimed at the Conservation and Restoration of Forests
Last year, the projects supported by Petrobras aimed at the recovery and conservation of forests in the Amazon, Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, Caatinga, and Pampa recorded, as a cumulative result, a potential estimated contribution of 870,000 tons of CO₂ in carbon fixation and avoided emissions, in addition to 95,000 hectares recovered or conserved, 220 springs preserved, 35 million hectares of protected areas with strengthened management and sustainable use, and over 960,000 seedlings planted, among other benefits.
Spread across several states and biomes in the country, the projects supported by Petrobras seek innovative ways to contribute to forest conservation. Three projects developed in states in the Northeast focus on preserving the Caatinga, the only entirely Brazilian biome. In the Amazon, Petrobras’ “Tradition and Future in the Amazon” project involves 12 municipalities in western Pará and Mato Grosso and promotes the conservation of local biodiversity along with actions to strengthen the management of over 11 million hectares of vegetation cover in the Amazon and Cerrado, in addition to initiatives aimed at capacity-building for income generation for the involved communities.
In Rio de Janeiro, Petrobras’ “Sertão Carioca” will contribute to the conservation of natural resources of urban forest and its buffer area, which is the transition area surrounding the conservation unit of the Pedra Branca Park, serving as a filter to reduce external negative impacts. Meanwhile, Petrobras’ “Corredor Caipira” aims to restore 45 hectares and connect landscapes through ecological corridors in five municipalities in the state of São Paulo, also working on creating corridors for people and institutions to connect knowledge and socio-environmental public policies.
Petrobras Environmental Commitments
In its Strategic Planning 2021-2025, Petrobras plans to invest around US$ 1 billion in environmental commitments, focusing on technological innovations to decarbonize operations, the development of more modern, sustainable, and higher-quality fuels, and skill development for the future. The environmental commitments are part of the 10 sustainability commitments announced by the company, of which six are climate-related, one is related to water, one to waste, one to biodiversity, and one to social responsibility, with three pillars: investment in socio-environmental projects, human rights programs, and community relations.
