Petrobras Announced A Radical Strategic Change In Its Investments, With The Resumption Of Investments In Its Refineries.
The company plans to complete the Abreu e Lima refinery in the state of Pernambuco, as well as the Gaslub hub in Itaboraí, Rio de Janeiro. These investments aim to increase the supply of diesel fuel, including large-scale production of Diesel R, also known as green diesel.
Green Diesel Is Produced Via Coprocessing Of Mineral Diesel And Vegetable Oil
The green diesel is produced through the coprocessing of mineral diesel with vegetable oil, with a portion that can vary from 5% to 10% of renewable diesel. The production of Diesel R is already part of Petrobras’ investment line in the research field and is a strategy aligned with the energy transition. However, large-scale production would only begin in 2023 at the Cubatão Refinery.
New Petrobras Board Proposes Expansion Of Its Refineries’ Capacity
However, the company’s new board proposed, at the Board of Directors meeting on September 27, a plan to expand the capacity of its refineries, including Abreu e Lima in Pernambuco, which would produce Diesel R. This change, which involves the construction of 100% renewable units, is being made to propose changes to the company’s investment plan.

The creation of the Energy Transition and Renewable Energies Board, headed by Maurício Tolmasquim, former president of the Energy Research Company, includes engineering, technology, and innovation activities. The new board’s proposal is the construction of units that produce only 100% renewable diesel, used as green diesel, from vegetable oil or animal waste, such as tallow.
US$ 1 Billion Resources For The Abreu E Lima Refinery
The resources for this construction are estimated at US$ 1 billion for the Abreu e Lima refinery, which could be adapted for the production of Diesel R due to its status as the newest unit. This investment will enable production to increase from 115,000 barrels to 260,000 barrels per day by 2027.
There is also the construction in Itaboraí, Rio de Janeiro, of 100% renewable units, the so-called green diesel. Claudio Romeo Schlosser, Petrobras’ Director of Marketing and Logistics, revealed that the new units in Rio and Pernambuco will still undergo the stages of conceptual, basic, and detailed project. Only after that will they go to bidding and construction.
The RNEST (Abreu e Lima Refinery) specializes in producing S10 diesel, one of the best products that Petrobras has on the market. It also produces fuel oil used in large engines by industry sectors, power plants, and ships, known as Bunker 2020. The export of 25,600 tons of green coke from oil to China made by RNEST last year featured the advantage of low sulfur content.
Abreu E Lima Refinery Could Be Adapted For The Production Of Diesel R
Diesel R is a more sustainable fuel, with a lower carbon footprint and greater energy efficiency, qualities that reinforce Petrobras’ commitment to the energy transition. Large-scale production will depend on adjustments with diesel fuel suppliers and diversification of other raw materials for processing at Petrobras refineries.
Petrobras announced a change in its investment plan, including the resumption of investments in its refineries. The goal is to increase the supply of diesel fuel, with the large-scale production of Diesel R, also known as green diesel. To this end, Petrobras will invest in completing the Abreu e Lima refinery and the Gaslub hub in Itaboraí, RJ.
