While the world looks at forests, the UN warns that the Earth is also threatened by the silent degradation of natural grasslands and savannas, ecosystems that cover half of the planet, support billions of people, and can exacerbate water, food, and climate crises.
The pilot (the professional responsible for “parking” the ships) began the maneuver around 5:30 AM, and shortly after undocking, with the assistance of five tugs, the ship had a machine failure.
According to Otávio Fragoso, vice president of the Union of Pilots of the State of Rio de Janeiro, the pilot maneuvered the vessel away from the terminal and then brought it to a stop using the anchor and tugs.
The ship is a VLCC – Very Large Crude Carrier – registered under the flag of Hong Kong, measuring 330m in length, 60.04m in width, and 20.20m in draft. According to Otávio, since the distance to the terminal was very small, the pilot had to move the vessel to another position.
“There was no room for the ship to turn freely without the risk of collision. So, the pilot had to lift the anchor and move the ship under tow to a safer position”, said Otávio, “As there was no structural damage, initially, there was no risk of an oil spill”, concluded the vice president.
According to the Captain of the Ports of Rio de Janeiro, André Félix, the problem with the ship was a loss of propulsion.
“It was a loss of engines. It is secure with five tugs keeping it away from the terminal. An inquiry will be opened to find out what happened. When propulsion is restored, the ship will leave the channel for the anchorage area, in open water, a location for large ships, at the exit of the Bay of Ilha Grande. There, it will be inspected to see if it can proceed on its voyage”, Félix informed.
According to the Captain of the Ports, twelve hours after the incident, the vessel’s engines were repaired, “The propulsion was restored and the ship moved to the anchorage area. But it will still be inspected to ensure it can proceed on its journey”, Félix stated.
