The Company Is Diversifying Its Refining and Fuels Production With the Biorefining Program. The New Petrobras Plant Will Be Exclusively Focused on Renewable Diesel and Aviation Bio-Kerosene, Main Bets for the Future of the Market.
Petrobras continues to invest in diversifying its refining product portfolio, focusing on the sustainability of the energy sector. For this Monday, (12/05), the company has a new project underway at the Presidente Bernardes Refinery in Cubatão, São Paulo. This is a plant for the production of renewable diesel and aviation bio-kerosene, the two bets of the company for the future of the renewable fuel market in Brazil and an advancement in the Biorefining Program.
New Plant for the Production of Renewable Diesel and Aviation Bio-Kerosene at the Presidente Bernardes Refinery Could Be the Future of the National Fuel Market
Between the years 2023 and 2027, Petrobras intends to invest around R$ 600 million in new alternatives for the Brazilian fuel segment, focusing on sustainability.
Its Biorefining Program aims to diversify production at the company’s refineries, including new renewable products for the national energy market.

Petrobras evaluates suspension of sales to distributors and considers canceling the cooking gas auction following guidelines from the Federal Government.

Lula reveals a masterstroke by Petrobras to undo a deal made by Bolsonaro, which involves the return of an important refinery that currently produces less than half of what was expected and makes Brazil dependent on international diesel.

A study confirms that the natural gas sector will reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Brazil by 0.5% and accelerate the energy transition by 2026.

Petrobras implements a severe adjustment and confirms a 55% increase in the price of aviation kerosene with a proposal for installment payments for the companies.
Now, the company has announced yet another new project to boost this initiative, the construction of a plant for the production of renewable diesel and aviation bio-kerosene in Cubatão, at the Presidente Bernardes Refinery.
Renewable diesel and aviation bio-kerosene have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by between 55% and 90% compared to petroleum-derived fuels, as they originate from renewable raw materials (such as vegetable oils and animal fats).
Thus, the company aims to take advantage of the growth in the renewable sector to invest in a new plant focused on these products.
The new Petrobras plant at the Presidente Bernardes Refinery will have a capacity to produce 6,000 barrels per day (bpd) of BioQAV and 6,000 bpd of 100% renewable diesel from processing up to 790,000 tons/year of organic matter.
It will be essential for the state-owned company to attract new investors in the energy market, as well as contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions.
The Director of Refining and Natural Gas at Petrobras, Rodrigo Costa, explained that “The new plant is one of the highlights of our Biorefining Program, crucial for delivering products with lower greenhouse gas emissions, in line with societal demands and a changing world. Besides the dedicated biorefining plant, we will invest in the co-processing of diesel with renewable content in other refineries and in the production of other derivatives from vegetable raw materials.”
Plan for the Production of Renewable Diesel and Aviation Bio-Kerosene Will Not Be Limited to the Presidente Bernardes Refinery Plant, Petrobras States
Although the project for the new plant for the production of renewable diesel and aviation bio-kerosene at the Presidente Bernardes Refinery is its main focus at present, Petrobras intends to implement renewable fuels in other plants across Brazil.
The main product in this initiative will be Diesel R, with renewable content. The company intends to intensify production at the Getúlio Vargas Refinery (REPAR) in Paraná.
In addition, production of the product will begin at the Presidente Bernardes Refinery in Cubatão (RPBC), the Paulínia Refinery (REPLAN), both in São Paulo, and at the Duque de Caxias Refinery (REDUC) in Rio de Janeiro.
Diesel R, alongside aviation bio-kerosene, is one of the main products in Petrobras’ new portfolio of renewable fuels for the future of the national energy market.
Thus, the company will continue to invest in new solutions and projects that enable the growth of this segment in Brazil.
