The Refineries Covered by the Contract Signed Between Petrobras and Águas do Rio Will Be Supplied with More Than 28 Million m³ of Water
The largest industrial water reuse project in Brazil will be carried out by the giant Petrobras together with Águas do Rio, responsible for supplying water to 27 cities in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The contract signed between the two provides that the operations of REDUC (Duque de Caxias Refinery) and the Gaslub Hub will be supplied with reused water, meaning more than 28 million m³ of water per year will pass through the refineries.
According to Rodrigo Costa, director of Refining and Natural Gas at Petrobras, the company believes that the rise of water reuse agreements may reduce the intake of fresh water. He further stated: “The company has been working on the theme of water security by adopting water reuse projects in its operations and wastewater treatment, as well as sponsoring projects for the conservation of springs and riparian forests.”
WHAT IS WATER REUSE?
Refineries 100% Supplied with Reused Water
Petrobras’s contract with REDUC, which will use the company’s pipelines to channel water, achieving a volume of 3,300m³ of water for the refinery per hour, formalized Águas do Rio’s role in supplying starting in 2024, with other refineries also able to use the reused water.

Given this advancement in the project to reuse water, the REDUC refinery will use exclusively this water in all its industrial processes, abandoning the “traditional method” of water intake, which, as mentioned, will reduce this use, making consumption more sustainable.
Gaslub Hub
Regarding GASLUB, the contract with it is in the concluding phase by Petrobras and Águas do Rio, as the agreement involves not only the industry but also the Gas Processing Unit of Itaboraí.
When the agreement is finally concluded, GASLUB is expected to receive, for all its operations and projects, up to 3,940 m³/h of reused water, with Águas do Rio eager to start its proposed investments in the Sewage Treatment Station of São Gonçalo.
