New discovery reinforces energy potential of Brazil and expands perspectives on reserves in historical production area on the coast of Rio de Janeiro
Petrobras announced a new oil discovery in the pre-salt of the Campos Basin, one of the most strategic regions for energy in Brazil. According to the state-owned company, technicians identified high-quality oil in the exploratory well 3-BRSA-1397-RJS.
The well is located 113 km off the coast of Campos dos Goytacazes, in Rio de Janeiro. Additionally, it is situated at a water depth of 1,178 meters. The information was disclosed by Petrobras itself, which highlighted the potential of the area.
This advancement draws attention because it reinforces Brazil’s capacity to expand its reserves. At the same time, it strengthens the country’s role in the global energy scenario.

How Petrobras identified oil in the region
The technical team found the oil through electrical profiles, gas indications, and direct fluid sampling. These methods allow for precise identification of hydrocarbon presence underground.
Next, experts will send the samples for laboratory analysis. These analyses will determine the characteristics of the reservoirs and fluids. With this, Petrobras will be able to better assess the productive potential of the area.
Furthermore, the company reported that it completed drilling safely. The process adhered to strict environmental and operational standards.
Another relevant point is that Petrobras operates with 100% participation in the field. In other words, it controls all technical and strategic decisions of the operation.
Campos Basin continues to be a key piece in national production

The Campos Basin remains one of the most important areas for Brazilian oil. It stretches between Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo and has sustained a significant part of national production for decades.
Additionally, the region continues to be active in new discoveries. In November of last year, for example, Petrobras found oil in the post-salt of the Southwest Turtle Green block.
At that time, the well was about 108 km from the coast. The water depth was 734 meters. These data show that the region remains highly productive.
To better understand, it is worth highlighting an important difference. The post-salt is above the salt layer and therefore allows for simpler extraction. On the other hand, the pre-salt is below this thick layer, in deeper areas, but concentrates large volumes of high-quality oil.
Marlim Sul field returns to the spotlight
The new discovery occurred in the Marlim Sul field. Petrobras originally discovered this area in 1987, through well 4-RJS-382.
Now, with the new identification in the pre-salt, the field gains relevance again. This happens because the company seeks to replenish its reserves in mature areas.
Additionally, this strategy helps ensure the company’s sustainability. At the same time, it meets the growing energy demand in the country.
Another important point involves the historical context. In 2026, Brazil will complete 20 years of pre-salt exploration. This milestone transformed the country into one of the main global producers.
Therefore, this new discovery not only expands the potential of the Campos Basin. It also reinforces Brazil’s prominence in the international energy market.
Do you think the pre-salt can still surprise with even greater discoveries in the coming years?
