New Unit in Itaboraí Strengthens National Supply, Reduces Imports, and Ensures Energy Security in Brazil
Petrobras has started the operation of the Natural Gas Processing Unit (UPGN) at the Boaventura Energy Complex, in Itaboraí (RJ). From now on, the unit processes 10.5 million m³ of gas per day, but by the end of the year, this capacity is expected to double, reaching 21 million m³. Therefore, the new infrastructure promises not only to expand supply but also to decrease dependence on imports.
Security in National Supply
Since Sunday (10), the UPGN of Boaventura has reinforced national supply by increasing internal production and thus reducing the need for imported gas. With the Rota 3 pipeline, which transports gas directly from the Santos Basin, the unit in Itaboraí ensures greater stability and security for the gas market in Brazil.
Essential Products: Natural Gas, LPG, and C5+
After processing, the Boaventura Complex delivers three essential products: Natural Gas (GN), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), and C5+ (Condensate). This way, Petrobras strengthens the market with a diverse portfolio and, in addition, improves gas supply for various sectors, from households to industries.

More Competitiveness and Sustainability
According to Maurício Tolmasquim, director of Energy Transition, the Boaventura Complex positions Petrobras with greater competitiveness. The unit increases supply reliability and simultaneously enables advantageous commercial conditions for customers. Thus, Petrobras strengthens its market presence and also promotes sustainable supply.
Boaventura Complex: Strategic Pillar
Therefore, the Boaventura Complex is a strategic pillar for Brazil, as it reinforces energy security and supports the country’s development. Thus, with the increase in national production capacity, Petrobras strengthens energy independence and ensures more sustainable economic growth.
Rota 3 Project: Flexibility and Efficiency
In addition to increasing processing capacity, the Boaventura Complex integrates the Rota 3 Project, allowing for a more flexible and efficient operation. This system, in turn, guarantees a continuous flow of gas, transported in an optimized manner from the fields of the Santos Basin to Petrobras’s processing units.
Benefits to Consumers
With a larger national supply, Petrobras reduces imports and is therefore able to offer gas at more affordable prices for residential and industrial consumers. In this way, the unit in Boaventura benefits the entire consumption chain by providing stable and reliable supply.
The Future of Natural Gas in Brazil
The Boaventura Complex strengthens Petrobras as a pillar in the energy transition and sustainability. In summary, the new unit increases the supply of national gas, reduces imports, and contributes to the country’s energy independence.
