Ambitious Initiative by Petrobras Promises to Revolutionize Oil and Gas Extraction in Deep Waters of Sergipe.
Get ready for a revolution in the waters of Sergipe! Petrobras is about to launch floating platforms for oil and gas extraction that promise to transform the energy industry in Brazil.
Petrobras announced during Rio Oil & Gas 2024 that two floating platforms for oil and gas extraction will be operated in the Sergipe Deep Waters Project (SEAP). The units, named SEAP I and SEAP II, are of the FPSO type (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) and will have the capacity to produce 240,000 barrels of oil and 22 million cubic meters of natural gas per day. These floating platforms will not only be responsible for production, but also for the storage and transfer of fuels at sea.
Floating Platforms for Oil and Gas Extraction Will Be Transferred
By adopting the BOT model, Petrobras ensures efficiency and safety in the new project. The BOT model (Build, Operate, Transfer) will allow Petrobras to build, operate, and later transfer the floating platforms for oil and gas extraction. This model was chosen due to the lack of bids for chartering, resulting from the credit crunch in Europe and Asia, the main financiers of this type of contract.

Alert in the global energy market: Severe tropical cyclone hits the coast and disrupts gas production at major plants in Australia, threatening global supply.
Sylvia Anjos, Director of Exploration and Production at Petrobras, explained: “The BOT reduces the initial investment and increases security for the companies involved, ensuring the viability of the Sergipe Deep Waters Project.”
120 Thousand Barrels of Oil and 10 Million Cubic Meters of Natural Gas per Day
The floating platforms for oil and gas extraction SEAP I and SEAP II will each have the capacity to produce 120,000 barrels of oil and 10 million cubic meters of natural gas per day. The project includes a pipeline for the flow of 128 km in length, with 100 km at sea and 28 km on land.
Marcelo Menezes, Executive Secretary of Sedetec, stated: “Petrobras’ decision to adopt the BOT model is an important guarantee for the viability of the Sergipe Deep Waters Project and demonstrates the state-owned company’s commitment to the development of the energy sector in Sergipe.”
Forecast for 2028
With the inauguration of the floating platforms for oil and gas extraction expected in 2028, the energy sector in Sergipe is about to gain a significant milestone.
