Petrobras Had Already Submitted to Aneel, in March of This Year, the Process for the Deactivation of the Thermal Power Plant in Camaçari, in the State of Bahia
Petrobras published a note last Tuesday (05/11), announcing that it will deactivate the TermoCamaçari thermal power plant, in the state of Bahia, after ending negotiations with Proquigel Química for the leasing of the enterprise. In March of this year, the state-owned company had already contacted Aneel to carry out the decommissioning of the UTE, claiming that the location would be unfeasible and also informing that the thermal power plant would no longer be part of Petrobras’ natural gas and energy generation plans.

Deactivation of Petrobras’ Thermal Power Plant in the State of Bahia
In a market note, the state-owned company informed that it will begin the decommissioning process of the TermoCamaçari UTE, which already has its authorization revoked by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel). Petrobras also stated that this operation is aligned with portfolio optimization and improved capital allocation for the company, aiming to generate value for shareholders.
The deactivation of the thermal power plant, after failing to follow through with negotiations with Proquigel, is part of Petrobras’ strategy in the natural gas and energy sector, which aims for the competitive operation of its own natural gas commercialization and the optimization of its thermoelectric product portfolio for self-consumption. According to this strategic direction, the state-owned company initiated the procedure for revoking the authorization of the TermoCamaçari Power Plant.

Thermal Power Plant in Rio Grande do Sul Is Key to Attracting GWM
In 2017, the natural gas thermal power plant in Bahia was completely surrounded by problems that ultimately led to its unfeasibility. In 2020, Petrobras had registered TermoCamaçari and several other thermal energy assets in an auction planned by the government to sign a 15-year contract for natural gas production, including new or refurbished projects.
The TermoCamaçari Power Plant of Petrobras
The thermal power plant was built in 2001 and cost over 60 million dollars, with a power generation capacity of approximately 120 megawatts (MW), resulting from a significant cooperation between Petrobras and the Portuguese EDP.
About three years later, the Brazilian state-owned company decided to take full control of the thermal power plant in the state of Bahia, paying an inflation-adjusted amount of R$ 240 million, and today holds 100% of the company’s business.
The installed capacity of the TermoCamaçari Power Plant is 138 MW. In 2013, it generated an average of 4,043 megawatts (MW) of electricity for the National Interconnected System (SIN). In 2014, the 21 owned and leased thermal power plants that comprise the plant produced an average of 4,761 MW of power generation.
Imetame Thermal Power Plant, Located in Camaçari in the Bahia, Will Be 100% Powered by Natural Gas
Owner of the UTE Prosperidade III, Imetame will own the first Carbon-Neutral Thermal Power Plant in Brazil. The 50-megawatt thermal power plant will be located in Camaçari, Bahia, and will begin operations in the second half of next year, receiving an initial investment of R$ 180 million.
The Camaçari thermal power plant, in the state of Bahia, will be built by Imetame, and its structure will be 100% powered by natural gas. Initially, the thermal power plant was to be based on eucalyptus biomass in Minas Gerais, but the project will now be based on another entrepreneur, who ended up leaving the venture.
Mercurio Partners enabled the country’s first natural gas thermal power plant to achieve zero carbon emissions and created an opportunity for the project, originally conceived as a biomass plant. The company will implement adjustments to keep the UTE and natural gas within the existing regulations.
