28 Students Participating in Free Technical Courses Sponsored by Petrobras Receive Today, November 19, the Technical Diploma of Stone Mason and Building Painter
The construction industry has always been a predominantly male sector, but in recent years, the participation of women on construction sites has been growing. Part of this transformation is due to the Mão na Massa project, sponsored by Petrobras through the Petrobras Socio-Environmental Program, which trains low-income women to work in the sector. And this Friday (11/19), the graduation of 28 students from the free technical courses of stone masonry and building painting took place. These women are residents of Itaboraí, Magé, Maricá, São Gonçalo, and Rio de Janeiro, seeking a chance in the job market. The graduation ceremony was held at the Fecomércio auditorium (Rua Marquês do Abrantes, 99, Flamengo), at 10 a.m.

The students received technical and social training. In addition to practical training, they had classes in Portuguese, mathematics, and learned about safety at work, entrepreneurship, citizenship, the environment, and female empowerment. “All participants will have a complete training in construction and will be able to execute projects from start to finish,” says the coordinator of Mão na Massa, Jacqueline Cruz.

Civil engineer and project creator Deise Gravina explains that most of the students are heads of households, and the course offers the possibility of stable work and job security. “Mão na Massa invests in the transformation and empowerment of women. In fact, we have many entrepreneurs who have realized their dream of their own business and still employ other classmates,” she says.
They are women like Erica Fernandes, 46, from Magé. A fisherwoman since her teenage years, she followed her father’s profession. Now, she wants to explore new areas and seek better financial returns. “I am already distributing my resume and I am ready for this new challenge. We learned everything about construction – from reading a plan to electrical and plumbing work,” she comments. She and other classmates have already put into practice what they learned, forming a group and carrying out volunteer renovations for those in need.
Her classmate, Thalia Porfinio, 22, also sees the course as an opportunity to change her life. Unemployed and a mother of two girls, she is currently living in a shelter in Itaboraí, hoping to have her own home soon. “I have gone through many ups and downs. I thought I wouldn’t be able to finish the course, but now I can’t wait to get my hands dirty,” she adds.
About Mão na Massa and the Petrobras Socio-Environmental Program
The Mão na Massa project, which offers free technical courses, is managed by the Protetor dos Pobres and Crianças Abrigo Maria Imaculada Institute and was created by civil engineer Deise Gravina in 2007, with the goal of integrating women into the construction market. Its structural axes are female economic emancipation; community benefits; encouragement to participate; and income generation. It is aimed at women aged 18 to 45 who have completed at least the 5th grade of elementary school and are in situations of social vulnerability or low income. “It was necessary to bring more gender equity to the construction site – and we succeeded. The project uses the strength of the construction industry to transform the lives of women in situations of social vulnerability,” she emphasizes.
In addition to Petrobras’ support, the project has partnerships with Fecomércio, Faetec, Sebrae, Seconci, Kolimar, Lar de Maria das Dores, Workay, and the Municipalities of Maricá and Itaboraí.
Through the Petrobras Socio-Environmental Program, Petrobras supports socio-environmental solutions on relevant topics for the oil and gas industry and for the territories where it operates throughout the country, through partnerships with civil society organizations. Initiatives aimed at job creation and income generation; preparation for the exercise of citizenship; assistance for children and adolescents; conservation of coastal and marine biodiversity; and recovery of forests and natural areas, among others, are supported.
