Petrobras President Stated That Gasoline, Diesel, LPG, and Jet Fuel May Get Cheaper at Refineries If Crude Oil Prices Continue to Decline and Exchange Rate Remains Favorable. Decision Will Be Made Based on the Company’s Biweekly Assessments.
The consumer may have some relief in the coming months. The president of Petrobras, Magda Chambriard, stated that the state-owned company may reduce fuel prices at refineries if crude oil prices in the international market continue to fall. The declaration was made during the New Industry Brazil event held at BNDES on Industry Day.
“If the price of oil drops further, we will certainly reduce fuel prices. I’m talking about gasoline, diesel, jet fuel [aviation kerosene], and LPG [liquid petroleum gas],” Magda said.
This positive signal arrives at a time of expectation for consumers, who have faced fluctuations in gasoline and diesel prices. According to Magda, Petrobras is attentive to market movements and monitors prices every 15 days to make decisions based on real data.

Cheaper Oil and Falling Dollar Help the Scenario
The barrel of Brent oil, the benchmark in the international market, is hovering around US$ 65, after starting the year above US$ 80. Additionally, the commercial dollar has already dropped 8% in 2024, another factor that helps ease internal fuel costs.
This decline is driven by a combination of global factors, including the slowdown of the world economy and increased production by OPEC countries. This combination puts downward pressure on oil prices, which may pave the way for price reductions to be passed on to the end consumer.
Diesel Has Already Had Three Reductions This Year
In May, Petrobras reduced the price of diesel at refineries by R$ 0.16 per liter, reaching R$ 3.27. This was the third drop of the year for the fuel. Gasoline, on the other hand, had its last adjustment in July of last year, when it rose to R$ 3.01.
According to Magda, current prices are below international parity, that is, the value that would be charged based on global costs. “Both gasoline and diesel are below international parity price. For now, we are monitoring,” she explained.
Reductions Also for LPG and Jet Fuel
LPG (cooking gas) and jet fuel are also on the state-owned company’s radar. Magda explained that jet fuel has a monthly adjustment and that, with the drop in Brent and the appreciation of the real, there is room for another reduction.
“If the price of Brent has fallen and the exchange rate has appreciated, there is every reason for a reduction,” she said. “Refinery prices are 36% lower for jet fuel since December 31, 2022. During this period, diesel has dropped 26%, as has gasoline (between -11% and -12%). Society needs to push for price reductions.”
Braskem and New Investments in the Naval Industry
In addition to fuels, Magda spoke about the strategic role of Braskem, considered the sixth largest petrochemical company in the world. According to her, Petrobras is committed to resolving the company’s corporate issues, including support for the purchase proposal made by businessman Nelson Tanure.
“I hope that any solution works out, and it will have Petrobras’s support, and we will indeed restore petrochemicals in Brazil,” she said.
She also announced that Petrobras should launch a tender by 2026 to contract 48 vessels, with 40% local content and support from the Merchant Marine Fund.
“We are talking about an investment of R$ 118 million in Brazil and the creation of up to 180,000 jobs,” the executive said.
