The State-Owned Company Is Seeking To Enable The New Green Bunker With The Addition Of Biodiesel In Its Composition For The Maritime Transportation Sector. The First Vessel To Be Fueled In The First Tests By Petrobras Was The Darcy Ribeiro From Transpetro.

The state oil company Petrobras recently conducted tests using its new green bunker, which contains 10% biodiesel in its composition. The company was at the Terminal de Rio Grande (Terig), in Rio Grande do Sul, where the vessel Darcy Ribeiro, from Transpetro, was refueled with the new fuel. Now, the tests will continue for about two months to assess the logistical risks of using its new bunker.

Vessel Darcy Ribeiro From Transpetro Receives The First Refueling With Petrobras’ New Green Bunker For Initial Testing Of The Fuel

Petrobras has been seeking to implement its new green bunker, with 90% of the original mixture and 10% of biodiesel in its composition, in the national transportation market.

Thus, the first refueling tests were conducted in the last week of 2022 to verify the viability of the fuel.

The vessel Darcy Ribeiro, from Transpetro, was the first to be refueled with the mixture and will serve as a basis for the logistical tests of the new green bunker over the next 2 months.

“The renewable fraction of the new fuel has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in relation to the bunker when considering the entire life cycle. The estimated percentage reduction of CO2 equivalent emissions from this mixture is about 7%,” Petrobras highlighted in a statement.

The new green bunker was developed at Petrobras’ Research and Development Center (Cenpes) and, until now, no issues had been observed regarding the main specific properties of the fuel.

Thus, the initial tests with Transpetro will serve to verify the actual feasibility of using the mixture in navigation operations.

The evaluations of the burning quality and stability of the mixture indicated approval for field testing on a maritime vessel.

The state-owned company’s new investment in the transportation market aims to ensure even greater environmental commitment, as the company expects that the inclusion of biodiesel will promote a reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by around 7% in operations.

What Is Petrobras’ “Bunker”?

Petrobras travels in distant seas with its fuels for maritime cargo and passenger transport. They are supplied through bunkering services by barges or pipeline, refueling vessels docked or anchored in the main Brazilian ports, including those operating in cabotage along the Brazilian coast and long-haul vessels navigating our shore.
