Through Its Subsidy Program, Petrobras Sets New Diesel Sales Prices in Official Statement

Petrobras Press Release: “Due to the methodology established by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) in Resolution No. 743/2018, Petrobras informs that the average diesel price practiced by the company at its refineries and terminals will be R$ 2.1228 per liter, from 10/30/2018 to 11/28/2018, a reduction of 10.1%. The value reflects the arithmetic average of the prices of road diesel, excluding taxes, practiced by Petrobras at its refineries and terminals in Brazilian territory.

This new phase of the Subsidy Program continues to foresee adjustments in regional average prices (South, Southeast, Midwest, North without Tocantins, and Northeast with Tocantins). The company will continue the economic analysis of the subsidy program for subsequent periods.”

As you noticed in the replica of Petrobras’ official statement, this reduction will last until the end of November. It is still unknown how this subsidy will practically affect consumers’ wallets.

This response from the state-owned company comes at an opportune moment, given the looming threat of a new truckers’ strike announced for this Monday (29). Naturally, the entire category was waiting for Petrobras’ positioning, which ended up being positive in the end.

One of the biggest challenges for the new government will be what to do with a continuous subsidy to domestic diesel prices. The government agreed to lower diesel prices to resolve a brutal 10-day strike by independent truckers in May, but the subsidy expires on December 31. Petrobras and other distributors, importers, and refiners that comply with the subsidy will be reimbursed for the difference between international export prices and domestic prices, which will cost about R$ 9.5 billion.
