The Partnership Between Petrobras, ANP, and SGB Will Allow Even More Data on Oil and Natural Gas Exploration in the National Territory. The New Data Repositories of Brazilian Geology Will Be Essential for the Future of Fuel Production.

For this Monday, (31/10), Petrobras is, in partnership with the National Agency of Petroleum (ANP) and the Geological Service of Brazil (SGB), developing a new geology project. It consists of two geological data repositories called lithotheques, to be located in Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais in the future. The expansion in research and collection of data on this area will bring even more control over oil and natural gas exploration in the country.

New Data Repositories on National Geology Will Be Located in Rio de Janeiro and Caeté, Confirms Petrobras

The national sector of oil and natural gas exploration will have new databases on Brazilian geology to contribute to fuel production campaigns.

Petrobras has teamed up with ANP and SGB to develop a project to install two new geological repositories, the lithotheques, which will be located in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Caeté, in the state of Minas Gerais.

Additionally, the oil company confirmed that discussions regarding the project are taking place amidst debates about the creation of the Reference Center in Geosciences, with high-performance laboratories, and the revitalization of the Museum of Earth Sciences.

“The collection of samples belongs to the Union and is currently under the custody of Petrobras. The project is the result of a memorandum of understanding signed in 2018 by Petrobras, SGB-CPRM, and ANP, aiming for cooperation and technical operational support to expand geological knowledge applied to oil and gas areas,” stated Petrobras.

Throughout 2020, the state-owned company was already discussing the theme of utilizing geological data for oil production in Brazil.

Thus, a cooperation agreement was signed with ANP and SGB for the creation of new lithotheques in the national territory.

The parallel projects for the installation of the Reference Center in Geosciences, as well as the renovation and expansion of the Museum of Earth Sciences, were completed in July this year, thus ensuring a space for the development of the repositories.

Petrobras, ANP, and SGB Aim to Contribute to the Dissemination of Knowledge in National Geology, Boosting Oil and Natural Gas Exploration

According to Petrobras, the new lithotheques should house hundreds of thousands of rock samples collected over more than 70 years of oil exploration history in Brazil.

This data from national geology will strongly contribute to greater control over what has already been found in Brazilian territory during exploratory campaigns.

Furthermore, the repositories will be essential for new oil and natural gas exploration projects, as companies will have access to key information on national geology.

Finally, Petrobras stated that it intends to lead the investment initiative in the Reference Center in Geosciences, aiming to further expand the repositories and research in the project.

Learn More About SGB

The Geological Service of Brazil is the company responsible for geological and geochemical mapping activities, from territorial integration scales to systematic surveys at 1:250,000 and 1:100,000 scales, with the possibility of reaching larger scales, depending on specific economic-social interests.

This is the so-called “flagship” of the organization, being the action that concentrates the largest budgets and occupies most of the technicians in the House.
