On December 30, 2010, two days before Lula’s term ended, Petrobras officially launched the oil field for commercialization and changed its name.
The decision resulted from a popular lawsuit filed in 2015 by lawyer Karina Palma.
In it, it becomes clear that Petrobras and then José Sérgio Gabrielli violated the principle of impersonality, improperly using the oil exploration field to honor the President of the Republic.
One of the judges who ruled on the case was Rogerio Favreto, who in 2018 ordered Lula’s release, a decision that was later reversed on the same day after a huge judicial entanglement.
According to data from the National Agency of Oil, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), the Lula field produced 1.033 million barrels of oil per day and 45.7 million cubic meters of natural gas in April, remaining Brazil’s largest producer.
