Around 7 PM, the worker felt unwell during the shift change in the loading area locker room at UCP1. “Rescue was called, but he was already without vital signs. The response was provided by the RPBC rescue team. There were several attempts at resuscitation, but unsuccessfully,” stated Sindipetro Litoral Paulista.
“The outsourced oil worker had worked a 12-hour shift under scorching heat, in an unhealthy area contaminated with respirable coke dust, and was subjected to intense noise from the machine he operated. To make matters worse, the loader, which had been replaced, had a constant leak, a problem that forced the outsourced worker to descend from the equipment, at a height of 3m, and carry a 20-liter can of hydraulic oil to fill the machine’s reservoir. Under these conditions, the colleague was under very high stress, fatigue, and coupled with his advanced age, this combination became a ticking time bomb that may have led to his death,” informed Sindipetro on their website.
This is the fourth fatal accident recorded this year in the Petrobras System that FUP has been made aware of. Since 1995, when the Federation began recording fatal accidents reported by unions, the number of workers who have lost their lives in activities at Petrobras has reached 385. Of these, 314 were outsourced. That is, more than 80% of the victims.
“An older worker, working in totally adverse conditions and on extended hours is unfortunately a sign of the times. It is the result of the government’s systematic attack on labor rights, safety regulations, and union and labor inspection representations, with the approval of the employers’ bench. It is impossible not to correlate one with the other. All we can do is lament this tragedy and call on public authorities, labor inspectors, MPT, and parliamentarians to join the daily struggle of union leaders and occupational safety professionals for better working conditions, with safety and dignity,” said Alexandro Guilherme Jorge, SMS Director of FUP.
