After Being Elected as the New President of Brazil, Lula Received a Request from the FUP for the Suspension of the Privatization of Oil Refineries in the Country. Petrobras and the Cade Had Made an Agreement for the Concession of Eight Plants During the Year 2019.

The Unique Federation of Oil Workers (FUP) Continues to Fight for the Preservation of State Assets in the Oil and Natural Gas Market. Representatives of the Agency Met with President Lula to Request the Suspension of the Agreement Between Petrobras and the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (Cade), Which Provided for the Sale of 8 Brazilian Refineries. The Newly Elected President Came Public on Tuesday (13/12) and Stated That Privatizations Will Not Continue During His Term.

Agreement Between Cade and Petrobras for the Privatization of Oil Refineries May Harm the National Market and FUP Requests Suspension of Sales

The Years of Bolsonaro’s Government in Brazil Were Marked by Strong Incentives to the Private Market, Including Various Privatization Projects of State Assets.

Among Them Was the Privatization of Eight Petrobras Oil Refineries, Expected After an Agreement Made Between the State-Owned Company and the Cade in 2019.

However, With the Recent Victory of President Lula, the Directions for the Sector May Change. The President Is Known for Being a Strong Supporter of the State Market and State Projects.

For This Reason, the FUP Requested the Executive to Suspend the Agreement for the Privatization of Brazilian Refineries, Aiming to Preserve the Remaining Four, as the Others Have Already Been Handed Over to the Private Market.

The President of the FUP, Deyvid Bacelar, Who Is Part of the Working Group (GT) on Mines and Energy of the Transition Team, Highlighted That “the Agreement with the Cade is Harmful and Contrary to the Refining Policy of Lula’s Oil and Gas Sector Program, Which Signals the Need to Occupy the Brazilian Market More, Which is the Sixth Largest Consumer Market in the World.”

The FUP Points Out That Petrobras was Omissive Regarding the Harm to the National Refining Market and Accepted the Proposal from the Cade Without Considering the Future Consequences of the Action.

Now, After the Sale of 4 Refineries to the Private Market, the Federation Hopes to Halt the Continuation of the Privatization Project.

Lula Goes Public and Says Foreigners Are Welcome, but Not for the Privatization of State Assets, During His Term

After Pressure from the FUP and the Request for a Position from the Executive, President Lula Went Public and Stated That Privatizations Will End During His Term.

He Said That Foreigners Are Welcome in Brazil, but Not to Buy State Companies and Projects, as These Are Not for Sale, Including Petrobras Refineries.

“Privatizations Will End in This Country. Almost Everything Has Been Privatized, and We Will Prove That Some Public Companies Will Show Their Profitability. We Want to Tell the Whole World That Anyone Who Wants to Come Here Is Welcome. There Are Jobs, There Are Things for You to Do, There Are New Investment Projects. But Do Not Come Here to Buy Our Public Companies Because They Are Not for Sale,” Announced the President.

The Transition Team of the Lula Government Has Already Requested the Halt of the Privatization of Petrobras Refineries, Along with Other Assets, Such as the Port of Santos, Dataprev, the Postal Service, and the Airports of Santos Dumont and Galeão in Rio de Janeiro.
