Nissan is innovating and expanding its line with a new half-ton pickup inspired by the look of the Nissan Kicks. But what many people don’t know is that, in Africa, the manufacturer already has an interesting model: a pickup based on the Renault Logan. Curious, right?

We are talking about the Nissan NP200. This model was launched in 2009 and is still popular there. To give you an idea, it was the ninth best-selling vehicle in South Africa last year, with 12,721 units sold. Even with this success, it is no longer sold in South Africa, but continues to be available in other countries on the continent.

The Nissan NP200 is a compact and sturdy pickup, built on a monocoque structure that hasn’t changed in appearance since its launch. In other words, those who buy it today get a design from the 2000s, both inside and out.

In the front, the pickup has halogen headlights and a small grille with vertical lines, sporting the Nissan logo. Depending on the version, the bumper can be black or the same color as the car, and there is an option for fog lights.

In the back, simplicity reigns: vertical taillights and a traditional cargo bed cover, unlike the Fiat Toro with its dual door.

And Inside?

Inside, the scenario is quite basic: fabric seats, an analog dashboard, and a steering wheel without buttons. No sophisticated multimedia systems, just a radio with AM, FM, MP3, and CD, available in some versions.

The Nissan NP200 offers six versions, with prices starting at 218,500 South African Rand (about R$ 65,322 excluding taxes). Features like airbags and ABS, mandatory in Brazil since 2014, only appear in the third most expensive configuration.

Engine Is Interesting

Regarding the engine, there are three options: two gasoline engines and one turbodiesel, all with a five-speed manual transmission. The first gasoline engine is a 1.6 with eight valves, delivering 85 hp and 13.1 kgfm of torque. The other, also 1.6, has 16 valves and delivers 103 hp and 15.1 kgfm of torque. The turbodiesel engine is a 1.5 liter with 84 hp and 20.3 kgfm of torque.

So, while we wait for the new Kicks pickup, it is interesting to see how Nissan has already been venturing into the compact pickup market in Africa with the NP200. Here’s a curiosity: will we see something similar here?
