With Power and Innovation, the BYD Shark Arrives in Brazil to Face the Ranger and the Hilux. Can It Conquer the Off-Road Market?
The BYD Shark, known as the most powerful mid-size pickup in the world, is about to arrive in Brazil. With its unique combination of hybrid engines and cutting-edge technology, the Shark promises to raise the standards of the off-road segment and offer a unique experience for Brazilian consumers, according to the website Quatro Rodas. But does it have what it takes to compete with established rivals like the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Hilux?
The Arrival of the BYD Shark in Brazil
The BYD Shark is scheduled to debut in Brazil next year. Initially, the units may be imported from Asia, but BYD has ambitious plans for its local production at the new factory in Camaçari, Bahia. According to Alexandre Baldy, head of BYD in Brazil, nationalizing the pickup is just a matter of time and final details.
The Shark is equipped with a 1.5 turbo gasoline engine with 192 hp and two electric motors – a front one with 228 hp and 31.6 kgfm and a rear one with 201 hp and 34.7 kgfm – totaling an impressive 480 hp. This configuration makes it the most powerful mid-size pickup in the world, with torque estimated at around 70 kgfm. All-wheel drive is always available, providing instant torque and excellent maneuverability, features valued in off-road conditions.

Autonomy and Efficiency of the New BYD Truck
One of the highlights of the Shark is its autonomy. Thanks to the innovative arrangement of battery cells, the pickup can travel up to 100 km in pure electric mode. In hybrid mode, the range reaches 840 km. BYD is also working to adapt its hybrid system to ethanol, which could increase its attractiveness in the Brazilian market.
The Shark offers a range of advanced technological features. The pickup has a digital instrument cluster and a multimedia center that totals about 23 inches. The user interface can be improved, but connectivity with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is a strong point, with wireless connection and a 50 W induction phone charger. NFC technology allows smartphones to be used as virtual keys, providing added convenience and security.
Bold Design and Functionality
The design of the Shark is inspired by sharks, with an aggressive front end that resembles the mouth of a predator. The DRLs that frame the full-LED headlights and the tiny front grille are standout visual features. The bed has a capacity of 1,435 liters and is equipped with three electrical outlets, ideal for powering devices during camping or off-road adventures.
With a length of 5.46 meters and a wheelbase of 3.26 meters, the Shark offers generous interior space. The flat floor, free of a driveshaft, provides additional comfort for backseat passengers. Up front, the central console is inspired by a spaceship, with attractive and easy-to-use buttons. The flat-bottomed steering wheel and incomplete spokes add a modern and functional aesthetic to the pickup’s interior.
Performance and Driving
During the test drive in Mexico City, the Shark demonstrated excellent comfort and agility. It goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds, offering good performance on accelerations. The double A-arm suspension, both front and rear, brings the Shark close to an SUV, ensuring a smooth drive on rough terrains. The terrain mode selection and 360º cameras facilitate off-road driving, providing robustness and reliability.
Outlook and Challenges
The arrival of the BYD Shark in Brazil represents a challenge for traditional competitors like the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Hilux. With advanced technology, unmatched power, and a focus on innovation, the Shark has the potential to capture a significant share of the off-road market. BYD’s Vice President for the Americas, Stella Li, emphasizes that the company is prepared to provide high-quality service to Brazilians, promising to transform the pickup market in the country.
