Central Bank Implements New Rules for Pix to Speed Up Refunds, Block Accounts Used in Scams, and Increase User Security.
The Pix, Brazil’s main instant payment method, will undergo significant changes starting in 2025. The Central Bank announced adjustments to the Special Refund Mechanism (MED) to accelerate refunds and close loopholes exploited by criminals.
Among the new features are the blocking of intermediary accounts used in scams and the creation of a mandatory self-service option for disputing fraudulent transactions.
According to Rodrigo Fernandes from the TechTudo portal, these measures aim to reduce losses for consumers and strengthen trust in the system.

What Are Chain Blocks?
The new chain blocking system will allow the Central Bank to not only suspend the original account involved in a fraud but also all subsequent accounts that received the diverted funds.
This measure seeks to close the loophole exploited by criminals, who quickly transfer the money to multiple accounts to hinder recovery.
With the change, funds can be tracked along the entire chain and returned within 11 days after reporting.
When Do the New Pix Rules Take Effect?
The changes will be implemented in stages. The MEC self-service will be available at all banks starting October 1, 2025.
The chain blocks will start voluntarily on November 23, 2025, becoming mandatory on February 2, 2026.
According to Rodrigo Fernandes from the TechTudo portal, this gradual implementation allows financial institutions to adapt their systems and guide their clients.
Who Can Be Affected by the Changes?
Besides scammers, regular users may also be impacted.
Small business owners, freelancers, and sellers of used goods who deal with a high volume of Pix transactions may have funds blocked if they cannot prove the legitimate origin of transactions.
Experts warn that the absence of invoices or receipts increases the risk of preventive blocks, as the Central Bank monitors movement patterns considered atypical.
What Are the Potential Risks and Losses?
The main risk is the delay in releasing blocked funds. Without proper documentation, the process can be extended, compromising the cash flow of businesses and the financial routine of individuals.
Additionally, there is a sense of legal insecurity since innocent users may be indirectly held accountable for receiving money involved in fraud unknowingly.
What Are the Expected Benefits?
The positive side is that the changes increase the chances of recovering stolen money and weaken so-called “dummy accounts,” used for quickly laundering funds.
Another benefit is that traceability can encourage more formal practices, such as issuing invoices and maintaining documentation, enhancing trust in the system and reducing fraud in the long term.
How to Protect Yourself Under the New Rules?
To reduce risks, the recommendation is to formalize all transactions, keeping receipts, invoices, photos, or messages that prove the delivery of goods or services.
Another tip is to avoid receiving Pix from third parties without a direct link and respond quickly to bank notifications. This caution increases security and helps unblock funds in case of investigation.
The Pix will continue to be a practical and fast tool, but starting in 2025 it will require more attention from users.
Formalizing operations and keeping records will be essential to avoid undue blocks.
Do you agree with these changes to Pix? Do you believe they bring more security or could harm small businesses?
